Fruityloops is generally looked down upon by professionals because it's fairly simple and easy to use, and so a lot of people make a lot of crap with it - but you can also do some pretty good stuff with it. Personally I don't use it but there are a bunch of videos of people using it on youtube. This guy used Audacity (free audio recorder you can get at audacity.sourceforge.net) to cut a beat that he assembled in fruityloops.

Reason is my favorite sequencer EVER. Its main drawback is that it has no audio recording capabilities - you can't record anything from a microphone directly into Reason. But it can be used as a plugin for other sequencers (ProTools, Cakewalk, Digital Performer, etc) or just as a stand-alone application. Here's a *very* basic demonstration of one aspect of the program that I just found by searching on Youtube.

Ableton Live is great for hands-on control of your loops and real audio. There are performers who actually compose and record all their music ahead of time, sample artists and remixers and whatnot, and then give concerts using just Live, and every concert is different. Watch this guy record things into Live from his turntable and then control their playback with the pedals at his feet. He's not even touching his computer but it's ALL being done in the laptop.
