Yea I remember this event (or one just like it) a few years ago at my college... I bunch of programming students from my college and universities near by form teams and challenge other teams from across the globe in 48 hour non-sleep marathon in creating a game... It was fun to watch them work through the concept phase and then showcase their finished product...

erhhh... I think we're talking about something different here. AGDQ is about playing through games at record speeds.
I think what you're talking about might be a Game Jam or a Ludum Dare?
