http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catan_%28board_game%29Anyone played this before? A buddy of mine picked it up recently and we've been hooked. We're meeting up regularly to get long ass matches in. The kinds of games where by the end of it everyone hates each other and there's more swearing than trading going on.
We love it. Apparently it's an older game and a few people I've talked to have heard of it, but it's new to us. I highly suggest it if you like board games like Risk and Monopoly

I think I've played it once over at a buddy, but I don't think I had the time to absorb all the rules properly.
I only vaguely remember something about resource collection related to the numbers on the hexagons :/.
I don't really meet up with friends much, so I very rarely play these kinds of games.

get seafarers of catan expansion imo best one as it keeps the game simple but adds a lot more to it ie space

The game is wildly popular among board game players in Denmark. Or at least it were. As you said, it's a rather old game already.
I only played it once or twice a long time ago. Might check it out again next time I'm at a friend who owns the game.

The games okay. Takes a decent amount of scheming to win.
Granted, the winner is usually the one who didn't ****/get farked by the other players.

the one who wins is usually the one who gets the best placement at the start

We like to mix it up and place the resource tiles randomly like normal, but then we have everyone place their settlements before the numbers are placed on the resource tile.
Sure you may be touching all 5 resources, but your Ore and Wood could end up being 12 and 2 rolls.

we do that for the first placement the 2nd is educated with numbers revealed

Even the best spot can be ruined if the other people work together to destroy them.

my favourite dick move is locking someone in with a well placed chain of roads its not as hard as you think either if they placed along a coast

I won again last night with the longest road and no access to Ore of my own.
I had my road going from one port across to the other side, it was pretty cool.

Is there a site/link that provides sufficient information that covers the basic as well as some more advanced information (going to my cousins in a month and they're pretty good at the game)?

In all honestly, I learned it from just playing it. Reading about it seemed like a lot of mumbo jumbo until literally after I placed my first two starting settlements and we did one round of rolls. Then I knew exactly how the game was played and started developing deeper strategies
http://www.settlers-strategy.com/settle ... ategy.htmlThis website covers some of the basic strategies. If I can add something I've picked up along the way: spend resources when you have them and it makes sense. There have been so many times I was gearing up for a Settlement or Town and someone rolled a 7 and I lost all my valuable resources. Also, don't sleep on Development Cards. They can change the game huge.
This was the result of the last game we played. I'm the white pieces. Longest Road for +2 Victory Points and I had a Development Card for +1 Victory Point

Love the game! Best thing to do is use everyone to scheme against each other. Best time to do this: when you have a husband and wife playing. They tend to **** each other over which makes for many lulz. :3
