Awesome Games Done Quick 2015 has begun



AGDQ is an event that happens every half a year (once under the name 'Summer Games Done Quick').
Games are speedran by different well known speedrunners in order to raise money for charity, in this case the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
Last year's events totaled $1,031,189.00 for the prevent cancer foundation and another $718,155.07 for Doctors without Borders.

And just to add to this, last time, one person donated $82,984.71 on his/her own. That's amazing!

Anyway, this is a great initiative!

A small research finds that

1) According to their website, "Donations are sent directly to the Prevent Cancer Foundation."

2) With 100% of the money going to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, what is now interesting is to figure out how that organization spends its money. In 2013, 76% of the total income was spent on the actual program, which I would say isn't too bad at all! Especially considering that 13.8% went to fundraising related expenses, and only 9.4& went to the administration (their salary etc.).

I don't know a whole lot about how other non-profit charity organizations spend their money, but 76% for the actual cause and only 10% in administration sounds pretty good to me.

They've raised 1.1kk for sure. Additionally there was a bug in the tracker that didn't pick up a few of the donations while they did actually end up in the charity's pocket. Total amount will be known after a week of manual counting, but the current estimation puts it at $1,500,000!

I prefer to give direct aid to people... who I know who are having a hard time.

I think a lot of people feel that way - me included. But even the ones who have a hard time here in Denmark doesn't have AS hard a time as the ones most charity organizations try to help in third world countries, which kinda puts me in a dilemma. That's why I don't care doing a bit of both.

It's perfectly reasonable to be wary. It wouldn't be the first time money got stolen by a charity. A lot of charities play dirty too even if the goal is genuine.
Over here they come door-to-door to get you to subscribe to a membership. Rather than simply letting you donate a single sum once at the door, they require you to donate a minimum amount over time, because reasons. Supposedly something about a single small sum costing more deal with than it gives to the actual needy.
The real catch though is that they keep sucking money till you tell them to stop. Except telling them to stop can only be done by phone and during regular work hours. Quite a pain.
I don't mind so much if the money actually goes to the charity properly, but it's not a good way to get the money. it only turns people away and decreases the amount of potential donators. If dealing with small sums truly costs more than it gives just put a minimum limit on the single-time donations... It's better than acting like a leech.
