New York City to Lift It

Image

Since a bizarre incident in which Rudolph W. Giuliani verbally abused a ferret enthusiast on the radio a decade and a half ago, New York City’s ferret owners have been dealing with two major problems.

One: They are, technically, criminals.

Two: Everyone thinks they are insane.

“People see it as a dumb, silly issue: ‘Who cares, weasels?’ ” said Veronica F., whose two clandestine ferrets, Watson and Nacho, live with her in Queens. “There’s a notion that we all have some sort of mental problem.”

Now, ferret owners have a chance to change the law — and maybe remedy their reputation as well.

Last spring, perhaps trying to demonstrate the relative warmth and fuzziness of the current mayor, or perhaps simply pandering to the all-important small-mammal lobby, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration proposed removing ferrets from the city’s banned-pet list, a zoological rogues’ gallery that also includes rhinoceroses, bats and poisonous centipedes. (A public hearing on the proposal before the city’s Board of Health is scheduled for Jan. 21.)

I'm fine with ferrets, but it worries me that poisonous centipedes have had to be banned. Who would want to own one anyway.

Er... Why are/were ferrets banned for? They make pretty cool pets!

This is sorta interesting...people pushing the boundaries...Gives way for others to want the right to own a hawk...or a raccoon...

Meh who gives a shit. If you MUST have one keep doing it illegally, chances of getting caught as long as you don't bring attention to yourself are nonexistent.

I've been around ferrets, known of people that have owned ferrets, and they, as all animals looked after, and treated correctly can be great pets.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but I've never seen a ferret like a honey badger...

All wild animals however "well raised" can instinctively hurt you...It may not be intentional of them but they can still hurt you...

Ferrets are a domesticated form of the weasel/ polecat family, they're technically not a wild animal. But any animal, be it wild or domesticated, has the potential to hurt, I've even had some horrendous scratches and bites off my rabbits!

I find it so pathetic when people don't set boundaries for their pets and end up having to deal with certain behaviors, no offense to you Isis.

Rabbits are prey animals, and tend not to like being picked up, I don't pick them up, if I can help it. But when I do, my biggest rabbit, who's a giant struggles quite a bit. But anyone that knows anything about rabbits, can tell you that. And I don't mean the people that keep a lone rabbit in a tiny hutch and check on them every couple of days.

Other then the fact he doesn't like being picked up, he's very tame!

Well, "civilized humans" AKA animals... can also hurt you badly.

Humans do more harm to any other living creature on this planet. We've hunted animals to extinction, and some on the verge of extinction. Not to mention what barbaric things we do to our own kind, in the name of religion, war and because some are just sick and twisted and can get away with it.

Considering raccoons are some of the cleverest animals out there, and how big they get, I would think they would be terrible pets.

I asked someone through facebook, who has/had a raccoon, and she said they need a lot of time and space, her raccoon had its own room. But like most animals, with the right environment, food etc, they'll make good pets.

I'm finding lately a lot more people having more exotic pets, like raccoons, meerkats and even foxes. But rabbits are classed as exotic pet over here, as they're not considered as a native species to this country. As originally our wild rabbits were brought into this country as meat, and basically escaped.
