Well, there are likely several reasons but one of them is undoubtedly the constant stream of price increases and fees that are taking out more and more of consumers’ wallets every year. A major new study from the Federal Communications Commission has found that basic cable prices increased by 6.5% throughout 2012 while expanded basic cable prices rose by 5.1% over the same period. In contrast, the general rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index throughout 2012 was just 1.6%, meaning that basic cable prices rose at more than four times the rate of inflation in 2012 while expanded basic cable prices rose by more than three times the rate of inflation.

Yeah my town just got cable internet for the first time through Charter so there's really no other options.

I think our prices are decent though $30 for 33 Mbs/down and 4 Mb/s up

I can barely believe that it is really like that in the United States. In Denmark, due to high competition, market prices for internet connections are actually quite low. Or well, at least they aren't rising 5.1% per year as the article mentions.

In Estonia the prices are fine too. I have a 50Mb/s net and I don't hate my ISP.

Our plan is supposed to be 50/25 mbs download/upload. Most of the time its around 20-30 download. Bullshit "up to" advertising.

If you keep complaining, maybe the rules will change. Here in Denmark we actually have a rule now, saying that if the ISP delivers 5% less than what they promise, you can actually get your money back. I can't remember if it is 5% or 10% - but it is somewhere around there.
It hasn't always been like this, though. But when enough people compalin, the politicians will eventually listen because they believe they can achieve some "easily-gained" voters by passing such a law.
