Picture this: a street with potholes as big as a foot wide. They sit there unfixed until a man comes along with a tractor and fills them himself.
And what does the city do? It tells him he could be fined, and take steps to undo the work he has already done. That's the situation facing Mike Defazio, who grew tired of seeing potholes on Broadway Avenue in Saint John, N.B. and decided to fill them with gravel last Saturday, CBC News reported.
On Wednesday, however, a city employee told him he had broken bylaws.
"I thought that I wasn’t really doing anything wrong, but he sure straightened me out on that matter," Defazio told the network. Defazio decided to do the work after blowing out a tire on the street three weeks ago. He also says he witnessed a funeral hearse trying to maneuvre around potholes, The National Post reported.
But in filling the holes, he also broke a bylaw stating that private citizens can't modify the city's roads, Kevin Rice, the city's deputy commissioner of transportation and environment services, told the newspaper.

Not that I blame him, but he really should've seen that coming...
It's kinda like mowing somebody else's grass... well meant or not it's unlikely to be appreciated.

Seriously, The city can't be bothered... to fix the holes even temporarily

Undoing his work seem stupid but he's not a professional licensed contractor/engineer hired by the city where liability is accounted for and work performed is documented... His work is not recorded/documented anywhere so nobody knows what he did and how well he did it... That's where the problem is...

Lmao! I love how you think all that stuff is actually important. I hope all those dirt roads I drove down were made by licensed professionals! I wouldn't want the gravel to give way and cause my truck to flip over... The problem here is most these small towns want to use the little money they get on "beautifying" their city, paving the roads to the city counselors' houses, and saying **** the rest of the people in the town. Local government is no different when it comes to corruption and poor budget management than our larger governments.

I know that filling a hole with gravel isn't something intricate but there is a process (legal and municipal) guiding these types of matters. You can't have citizens thinking its OK to start doing road construction projects out of the goodness of their heart without any due process that would account for liability, standards, and accountability...

I used to work for a county highway department, my dad currently works for one, I can honestly say that you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

My bad... I didn't realize the guy was filling in pot holes on the highway... I thought he was filling them in on a residential street... Oh, wait... No, no he wasn't filling in highway pot holes... So traffic wasn't traveling over 65mph in a constant flow?... So you don't need any special procedure to correctly fill it... and the city crews aren't responsible for highway maintenance... Damn I really don't know what I'm talking about, and your ad verecundiam with your impeccable credentials are proof enough to discredit my statement. Obviously.

Money... Misappropriate resources... and cause they just got other shit to do sometimes.

Obviously the real problem here is allowing anyone to fix or alter a city's/town's/community infrastructure be it roads, bridges, tunnels, waterways etc without any governance whatsoever...It doesn't matter if it's a small fix or not...
When it comes to these things we tend to take comfort in knowing that a job is being done by the right people or at the very least we take comfort in knowing who to strangle by the neck (figuratively speaking) when it's not done properly...
Not to mention that we elect people to manage these things...We pay taxes so these things can be taken care of...It's ludicrous to be fixing them ourselves after all that....This is also another major factor/concern to the problem...

Where does all the tax money go then? I guess, they being used to promote unions, to buy weapons etc..
Well, potholes might take... 10 years until it's fixed! But we should be glad!

id rather he tried to ruin the roads, destroying them, that way they'd take fixing the road seriously.
