around him off the phone'
A vigilante motorist is facing a $48,000 fine for allegedly using an illegal cell phone signal jammer in his SUV to keep drivers around him off the phone.
The Federal Communications Commission says that Jason R. Humphreys hid the jammer in his SUV and operated it every day on the Interstate 4 in Florida for about two years before he was caught.
The 60-year-old driver allegedly admitted he deployed the jammer, which transmits radio signals that interfere with or block electronic communications, to stop motorists driving while using their cells.
But the FCC claims the repercussions were far more serious - he was jamming cell phone towers and, potentially, the communications of emergency responders.
'The moral issue is that it's just very dangerous,' Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry McKinnon told ABC Action News.

You know what someone should invent?
1. A "u-turn" signal.
In places like florida, where uturns are abundant due to a million stupid medians, this would help immensely.
2. All cars should have a mandatory feature so that when an emergency vehicle with sirens on is near, their radio/music player gets shut off.
I can't begin to tell you how often I'll have music blaring, and not even hear a siren until its smack dab next to me.

That old man had good intentions but poor execution...People with cars that don't have built in cell service technology should buy those aftermarket solutions where you can plug your phone into your car stereo and talk hands free....That would help make the roads safer...Too bad you can't really enforce this...

Then maybe you should look in your mirrors more often, or perhaps not have the music turned up that high.

I do check my mirrors quite often.
Do I check them every 3 seconds? No. But then again, who does?
And its not like the music even needs to be all that loud to drown out a siren.

My guess is that the volume of sirens vary from country to country. Here in Denmark, it's literally impossible NOT to hear a siren, no matter how loud your music is.
Getting back on topic, I couldn't help but smile as I read the story. He should probably have taken the potential dangers a bit more serious (not being able to receive emergency calls etc.), but I do like his idea, though. Maybe I should get one of those jammers myself. Would be great fun at uni during lectures

It seems like a good idea but I know if I was talking on the phone I would most likely still have two hands on the wheel and hold the phone to my ear with my shoulder. If the signal suddenly dropped without a warning the first thing I would do is grab my phone and look at it, taking my eyes of the road. I would then continue to look at the phone to figure out what the hell is wrong. While checking my phone and looking for a signal I completely lose track of the car in front of me who is swerving in out of the lane because he is looking at his phone with a puzzled look on his face. I honk the horn to try to get his attention back on the road, he panics and turns the wheel as far to the right as he can, then he tries to pull back to the left but over corrects and goes straight into oncoming traffic. An eighteen-wheeler slams right into his driver's side door. I stop and get out of my car to check on him. There is blood everywhere, he is no longer moving. I ask if he's ok and there is no response, his eyes are wide open. I try to call for an ambulance but something is still wrong with my phone and it won't make the call. I watch as he slowly bleeds to death in front of me. I check to see if I can find his phone to make the call, maybe his works. There's a message on his phone, it's from his brother telling him and his wife is in labor and about to give birth to his baby girl.

Don't listen to the Sirens' alluring song, it might cause accidents.
