Lenovo y510p boot

Hai guys,

So, after not having a laptop or any kind of pc for like 1,5 years cus I couldn't afford any. But now, finally, I got my Lenovo y510p which came with FreeDos, so I wanted to install win7 on it. Of course -with my luck- it didn't go as planned.
I made a UEFI bootable flashdrive with Rufus (guide found on eightforums.com, i think) after I've
created an .iso file of my original win7 DVD. The problem is my y510p fails
to recognize any flashdrive. In the boot menu (F12) it shows 2 options: HDD
boot and Network boot (ipv4/6). If Legacy support is disabled in bios it
only shows Network boot option (ipv4/6). Is there any way or what should I do to make this crap recognize usb boot options?

Ive been thru like 500 installs of win7/linux, never had a problem like this before. The only machine where I need help, is my own...

So, any kind of idea is appreciated cus I'm out of them.

Set it on Legacy, save & go back to BIOS
Then check if there is an extra option under the legacy option
-> some BIOS then show 3 options (UEFI - CMS (I think) - both), choose "both" (if that doesn't work, try CMS)

Check your BIOS for the "fast boot" option, if u have this -> turn it off
Cuz fast boot disables USB on boot, meaning u can't boot from USB stick


If u have an .iso file of the W7
just create an usbstick with "windows 7 usb dvd download tool"

afterwards delete ei.cfg on the USB-stick (this way, u can choose which version of W7 u want to install)

Boot priority: Legacy first/UEFI first
Usb boot: Enable/Disable

If i set boot mode to UEFI the boot priority disappears -obviously- so only the usb boot option remains. If i set boot mode to Legacy support, i can still set boot priority(L\U) and ofc USB boot (D/E).
I have no safe boot option in bios.

So, I think the problem is with the machine itself.

+1: As it came with FreeDos (Dont even know what it is, never seen one) shouldn't I be able to boot into it? (Isn't it a command line like OS? So, if everything was ok I should see something like C: and the cursor flashing, shouldnt I? )

Could u remake the stick with the USB download tool from microsoft?
Because I think this is giving u troubles

don't forget to delete the ei.cfg after the stick is made, otherwise u won't be able to
chose which version u want to install

Does your laptop have USB 3.0 ports?
I have had issues where I can't boot from USB sticks when they are plugged into USB 3.0 ports

Can u check if the BIOS detects ur USB stick? (legacy mode)
normally USB sticks are "found" under removable devices (sometimes under hard drives)

Yea, tried with the official tool and deleted it, still nothing. And nope, it doesnt detect anywhere my usb stick. It has 2 usb3.0 and an always on 2.0. Tried all 3 of them, same thing.

It only shows HDD and Network boot options. Thats the main problem. Tried with different usb sticks (linux and win7 on them) and none of them were detected.
Cant boot from dvd as it is a dual gpu model, so no optical drive. And it should be trivial to recognize usb drives...

U must make the HDD windows based again, with a bootable program like acronis.

what u just mentioned now, has nothing to do with that...

change UEFI to MBR...
ur HDD is either MBR or GPT

Yep, mine is a 3.0 but we tried with a 2.0 too which had a linux on it. Anywayz, Im taking it back, so...we'll see. Oh and btw, its bios is like... "empty". Never seen a bios with such a few options.
