MMORPGs. How to play them? What's your approach?

While I enjoy the experience of playing MMOs, I'm very horrid at it... I don't really have a system... Most of the MMOs I've played were level cap oriented and not grinder friendly... Because of that I find myself making multiple characters and before I know it I have 3-4 characters hovering at mid-high level and never reaching the big boy stages...I never understood how others put up with the repetition of taking a single character all the way....Whats your strategy/approach/system to MMOs?...

I have one goal in an MMO:

To piss off anyone and everyone by being the biggest dick around.

Usually I do quests and stuff. But I'm not good at MMOs either because I play alone and I get bored quickly.

A mix of this and OP... I like going through the lvls quickly and the easiest way to do that is make new characters. Had 6+ chars on isro probably all around lvl 30. The ones I did lvl was because of the guild I got in. Then it got a lot more fun to grind.

I tend to get a bit bored of my chars as well. At least in the long run, and I can therefore easily relate to what you're talking about.

What XMoshe just said holds true for me as well: The chars I ended up playing on for a longer time were the ones where I got into a nice guild.

I actually never played another MMO for more than the first 20/30 lvls (cabal pserver aside) because after learning every little thing from sro I couldn't be bothered learning it again for another MMO. And if I don't know about everything there is to know about a game, what's the point.

Yeah, it's hard to go from krallness to noop.

Yeah I don't play other MMOs either. Or if I do, then I quit by the time I get like lvl 10 or something. The second MMO I played the most is Jade Dynasty where I got like 90+ or something. And another one is C9 where I got to about 30.

Looking back I can truly see that team effort is king...especially for grinder MMOs...It helps fuel one's commitment to go all the way.... SRO was mostly solo based in it's early days so I guess that was a factor to my horrid approach... Even in a guild we were soloists... I took this independent mindset to other MMO's....no wonder why I sucked......

Can totally sympathize with the indecisiveness on choosing characters..Usually due to watching too many youtube videos of pvps.

Also reading up on all the mythology of the game. I would read hours on end of those stupid biographies they would right about Yeohas, Tigers, lol. And those weekly comics on the main website too, if anyone remembers.

Oh damn, the comics. Those were cool. I used to read about the mobs on the site too, that was when the site still had its first design and was actually at silkroadonline.net.

One of my rules is generally speaking to never make alts until i am at cap.

How often do you break that rule? I always make a character go to like level 30 or something, something mid tier and then I build another character because I want to experience a different play style or variety in gameplay.

A good rule.... And a very accurate depiction of what happened to the rule when I tried to exact it....lol...

I would say I break the rule maybe 10% of the time, probably less. However I don't mind creating one or two alts and get them to like lvl 6, just to mess around a bit.

Create new character, cap level, get decent high-end gear (enough to compete with anyone in pvp), then make a new alt. I always try to enjoy the leveling process rather than see it as a grind and I start buying my end-game gear before I even hit the cap.

Right now I have 7 Lv80s in GW2 and planning to make my 8th one next month. After that, I guess it's time for me to create my legendary. If I combined the amount of gold I've spent on all 7 toons, I'd probably have enough to get 2 legendary weapons already. :soosad:

He's ma best mate in SRO...We have a long game history...Tons of fun... If I followed his lead I wouldn't be as daft at playing MMO's...

End of the day, we all made errors while playing sro, but hopefully that can be put aside and move forward to what we have learned.

WoW was the only MMO I took sort of seriously, and my goal the entire time was to make my character the best it could be.

That was through hardcore raiding so I focused all my efforts on that one character and raiding with it. Best time I've ever had in an MMO.

Same for me
Bought it when it got released and few months later, just quit
Played a lot of World vs World; but when ur World is full of retards & u end op last place
every time... it's just depressing
