How did you grow up?

Post by Squirt »

After viewing that topic by zaknight and not knowing if he was serious or not, I was wondering, what are the social classes that make up SRF?

Are you guys rich? (300k / year I'd say is rich)

Are you well off (~150k/ year)+

Are you average? ( 40 - 90k / year

Are you poor?

( These figures can be adjusted for what you see fit)

Personally I grew up in the lower end of average and never really had much spending money. I remember having friends on SRO, who were the same age as I, and would buy ridiculous amount of silk and I always wondered how. I finally figured out that not everyone came from an average income family.

For those who did come from a family that was well off or greater, would you considered yourself as spoiled whilst growing up?

I'd say middle to lower range.

My father used to be the regional VP of cracker barrel. So he was making 6 figures a year. But, he also had 9 kids. So, even though we had money, we never really spent it on stupid things (aka a lambo). We lived a simple life, had numerous gardens, sheep, etc.

He also gave away most of his earnings to people in need.

I was always under the impression that money was tight, even though it probably wasn't. Which I'm extremely grateful for.

As I got older, my dad quit his job to become a full time pastor. So, he went form a 6k figure salary, to like 3k/month salary. Money actually did become tight, but he always managed to make it work. And our life style didn't change. He supplemented the loss of income by starting a few business', and doing odd jobs where ever he could find them.

Respect the hell out of that man.

Well, my father was the main bread winner making about 60-75k a year and my mother was around 30-40k a year. We were doing alright for a family of 6, though strapped for cash every now and then because in my opinion, the money wasn't managed very well..

Grew up somewhere in the middle class but my family had what you could consider old money. However the side of the family that I was living with has always been very cheap and would never spend more money than was necessary (that means no vacations, no sports cars etc). It wasn't until I was about 16 and got access to my own bank account that I realised we had money, and I've been living very comfortably ever since then.

In Nepal I'd say we were ~well off. My dad worked his ass off to come to the big city & my mom's family was rich so we had "connections".

In America I remember my mom used to work two 7$/hr job back to back and my dad made like $30k per year; now (apparently) they make combined 125k+, which is great though I'll probably get shafted on the fafsa/student loans now, and we still never have any money ofc.

Below average, but not poor. A good part of my life, it was just my mum, brothers and I, then my mum re-married. We weren't well off, and we weren't poor...

grew up as the epitome of middle class - higher end of average/lower end of well off using your numbers i'd say. definitely didn't get spoiled (lot of siblings) except in the sense we always had wonderful internet, so any online game that was p2p i'd pull host often. :sohappy:

Came to the US around age 11. Grew up on a single-mom's 30k(US) income for three children afterwards. Sold drugs/candy to buy a pc. Now in school gathering up the debt. xD

My parents came to Canada when they were 21/22, they had me when they were 23 and then moved to Ottawa when they were 24.
We were under average, but not poor or struggling to get by, we lived in a small 2 bedroom apartment until I was 7. For the first 10 years (1990-2000) my parents have lived in Canada, they managed to support my brother and I, afford 2 cars, and buy a house (215K~). A few more years later, my dad sold his first car and bought an SUV (40K~). Fast forward 13 years (2013), we now live in a 450-500k home and own 3 cars.
My family is very conservative with money, buying only things that we need. I am fortunate to be able to go to college without any government loans; my parents have paid for my first 2 years of college, I am now taking on all expenses of my last year by myself. My family is pretty much debt free minus the mortgage (200k~) on our current property. However, that can be offset by selling our old house; which we chose to rent out instead.
I am very grateful to have seen my parents come from almost nothing to something.
We never celebrated Christmas, just birthdays and Chinese New Years.
I never had an allowance, but my parents were always willing to give me spending money, not that I asked for much anyways.

For as long as I can remember, we have always been in the lower middle-class of Denmark. My parents didn't spend a whole lot of money on too expensive stuff, though, which meant that I never felt like we didn't have enough money to live off.

No, I didn't get a Playstation or an Xbox, and no I wasn't spoiled, but we had plenty to live off.

My dad is a salesperson for a smaller Danish company, and my mother worked as a occupational therapist.

Initially I grew up dirt poor from birth-9 years

then my grandparents gained custody of me and I guess I would have been considered well off.

So from 4th grade until the end of high school I attended private schools. I didn't get everything I wanted which was obviously good. I had to work for a lot of my stuff and most of the things I was given were investments such as education.

Lower average, but didn't stop my parents to 'spoil' me I suppose. I did have all the new consoles and a few games while growing up I guess that's where me being spoiled ends.

I grew up in a wealthy family. Even though some people might say i'm ungrateful or talk shit on me, it really sucked for the most part. To put it in a nice way money isn't everything.

Parents probably make around 90k together. They didn't make near that in California so my brother and I grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood. Once we moved they got decent jobs and bought their first house in a nice white neighborhood. So I'd say we are in the lower middle class but we never had a lack of anything. I had a GameBoy Color and a PlayStation growing up. I had to buy my own computer and every game console after that by doing yard work for neighbors and friends. Taught me to work hard and save money. :dope:

I wasn't offended but could you explain the nice white neighborhood part? Are you of a different race? Raised in a mostly black/hispanic area?

In Chicago I could say the same about a mexican and black neighborhoods. Typically not ideal living situations especially the black areas. Why? It's filled with gangs as well. I've also called a quiet suburb "white neighborhoods," simply because it was predominantly white people living there. Growing up I've lived in the close to black, but in the mexican side where I could hear gunshots every night. I'm not joking when I say it splits off like that either.

Every time I tell people I used to sleep soundly through gunshots here at Washington they think I'm crazy.

Doesnt matter how much money you have. If you don't have children you are still very poor. (I am still very poor)

Average. As far as property goes, the family is quite wealthy in my home country but I'm not really the type to ask for money.

Guessing the figures are in dollars ,but even so I'd still be classed in the well below average/poor

Parents earning easily well below 30k (gbp) combined and thats me being generous as I can't remember what they earned when I was growing up, never owned a new car or even settee/sofa and when I was little we rented not owned a tv so you get the idea.

Even now isn't any better they've got income tax arrears, still a mortgage of 118k'ish (it's only gone up after re-mortaging 3/4 times) and generally struggle with just living. Only reason it hasn't been worse for my family personally was my late step grandfather had an extremely tough life when he was young and saved his entire life as a result and saved my family on so many occasions I've lost count.

So to the question of being spoilt, The answer depends on how you define being spoilt. Despite personally having money issues there will always be someone both better and worse off than yourself so...

But with regards to the sro and silk part by the time I started playing I was in my early teens and had my own ways of income. And with all said and done when someone wants something bad enough they'll find a way to get it and bugger the consequences
