Why is it that the word "lol" is automatically written after almost every sentence now.
No matter what the subject is most people I talk to and I myself automatically tack on the word lol even if it doesn't fit.
Has it just become habitual for a large portion of this generation?

I refuse to become a part of that shit. It's annoyed the **** out of me for a while.
Downside is, most people think you're pissed if you don't include a "lol" or smiley face after saying something.
Example:
"Hey man, **** you."
Vs.
"Hey man, **** you. Lol"
I refuse to add it though. My friends know what I mean, and if people get butt hurt over you NOT using it, they can go to hell.

If its funny and you know it add a lol.
If its funny and you know it add a lol.
If its funny and you know it then your text will surely show it.
If its funny and you know it add a lol.

I use "haha" instead of "lol" at the end of my sentences. I dunno, I guess it's sort of a way to imply that you thought your statement was funny.
I've also seen lol or haha used as a sort of awkward pause.

The difference between verbal communication and text-based communication is context. As text based communication lacks voice tone, body gestures, the timing between words etc its very hard to set the context that the message should be received in. As such, "lol", "LOL!", "LOL!!!!!!!111", "TROLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL" are used to help set the context.
For example, imagine the context that the following two sentences may be used in.
"Man, you're such a wanker."
"Man, you're such a wanker xD"
Personally I use emoticons and "haha" quite often to varying degrees. "(:", "=)" and ":]" convey happiness. ">=(" conveys displeasure. ">=)" conveys that I'm feeling cheeky. It helps set the context between what will be a blatant insult and just joking around and having a laugh.
