120/144Hz vs IPS

Boxing day is just around the corner and I'm itching for a new monitor.
I currently have a 21.5" 5ms, 60hz LED monitor, but I want to upgrade to a bigger monitor that's either 120/144hz or IPS.
I currently don't see any drawbacks of a 60hz 5ms monitor, but that's because I've never used a 120/144hz 1-2ms monitor. I've heard of some people saying that once they switched to 120/144hz, they can never go back to 60hz.
As for IPS, the standard is 5ms/60hz, but with excellent colour accuracy and viewing angles; which is something I'm interested in.
What are your thoughts/experiences?

Can you really tell the difference or are those people just BSing themselves so they feel as if their upgrade was worth it? I'm using a 24" 60hz 5ms LED monitor and no problems with it.
Do you really need to play beyond 60FPS though? The only reason to get 120 or 144 is to play beyond that.
Also, for bragging rights:

I can easily see the difference between 60hz and 120hz. Now between 120hz to 144hz not so much. IPS displays are wonderful but a lot of people hate on them because they're used to the over saturated colors from OLED displays. The AMOLED displays on phones are the best example of this. People love the Galaxy line screens but IMO they're ugly but sharp. I want real colors not an over saturated green.

Can't say anything about that. I never even get 30 fps with new games.

Yeah some of the people I play BF3/BF4 with swear on their lives that 120/144hz makes everything so much smoother/easier.

Tempting thought. The price difference isn't that big in comparison with a 60hz. Maybe it'll be my main monitor and use my current one as a secondary. But for now, I'm perfectly fine with a stable 60FPS on ultra settings. wheeeeeeee~~~~~~~

The real Black Friday equivalent in Canada, but it's the day after Christmas instead of Thanksgiving.
Right now, I'm deciding between
ASUS MX239H - IPS/60Hz/5MS
or
ASUS VG248QE - LED/144hz/1MS
But I'm leaning towards the IPS because it's about 50$ cheaper and the IPS image quality will stay with me even when I don't hit 60FPS in games, and it has 2xHDMI which makes room for one of my consoles :<
BUT I really want to try this 120hz+ hype
