Old laws that used to make sense and simply haven't been revised.

But... many of the laws don't make sense. ^
In Massachusetts it is illegal to go to bed without bathing, however, in the same state, law prohibits bathing on Sundays
In Switzerland, it is illegal to flush a toilet after 10pm
In China, it is a law that a person must be intelligent to go to college.
In Colorado it is illegal to collect rainwater.

I've been to Switzerland, and I flushed the toilet after 10 PM. No one ever said anything.

Somehow, they used to make sense. Massachusetts, is one of the oldest states in the USA, who knows what they were thinking back in the 1800s? China is much older, maybe the law made sense long ago. We can only guess at the other ones.

In Massachusetts it is illegal to go to bed without bathing, however, in the same state, law prohibits bathing on Sundays 1. Because smelly people are gross. 2. Bible says to come to church "as you are".
Also, bible says you're not supposed to do any strenuous labor on the 7th day. Hauling buckets and buckets of water is quite strenuous.
In Switzerland, it is illegal to flush a toilet after 10pm Back in the day, due to how cold it gets in Switzerland, flushing the toilet after 10pm would cause the pipes to freeze over)
In China, it is a law that a person must be intelligent to go to college. That's a given in any country.
In Colorado it is illegal to collect rainwater. Rain water helps prevent forest fires. If you have someone who tries to conserve large quantities of rain water, you risk hurting the environment.

"In the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it."
