People shove themselves up into places where they don't enjoy being in(or they get shoved up there), so they try to cover the awkwardness of the uninteresting conversation or dead air with being/acting busy with their phones, if they're having good time no phones would be in the picture.
but for other cases like selfies and recording a concert instead of enjoying it, I agree, this is retarded.

If I were bored somewhere, I couldn't pull out my phone because I have nothing to do with it, it's not a smartphone. But at least none of the vid applies to me then. Until I get a smartphone that is.
Recording concerts is retarded. We had a particular event at the school once and I was the one filming, I didn't really like it because looking at the screen instead of experiencing it with your own eyes kinda sucks.
