A lot of Nordic countries have subsidized higher education. You basically pay for it through your taxes, but that has been working pretty damn well for them.

I don't pay to go to college, but it's kind of specific in the ex-Yu countries.

because north americans are dumb as ****, here in quebec we had students going on strikes last year about the increasement of education fees and people where talking shit about them and saying they were lazy motherfucker and should be working their ass to get the money.

point is, thse students will get a betetr income, therefore will be paying more taxes wich will pay for what they got from us earlier.

but people rather eat hotdogs and pay taxes to build a stadium in the hope that we might get a hockey team.

I Farking hate this city

When I finish high school, we will have free uni in Estonia too, so it might be a little easier not having to get a student loan just to pay for uni, but it might be more difficult to get in since more people are going to apply and you get in based on a ranking that they make from high school exam results. What is nice is that we only have to get a single point in a high school exam to finish high school, only you'll get nowhere with that one point.

The sound of free education sounds real nice as I will be moving into a period of loan payments next year when I am done....

It's simple in Finland, we have progressive tax system (more you make, the higher your tax % is) so when a student studies for free, makes very little money (with part time/summer jobs) he pays practically no taxes. But once we graduate, and earn higher, government earns their money back by being able to tax us more, since we got better education -> better job -> better salary. Sneaky.

But then again, I wouldn't mind taking a student loan (a small one, like 2 000€ or so) because living with the money government supports for students (like 400€/month) is kinda hard, since my rent is 250€ already.

Thankfully we have a proportional tax system.

Goverment gives me nothing, and I live with 200€/month. And I live with ease.

No, I only have 3 roommates and the apartment is kinda big-ish for a college students. Approximately 60 square meters, without the balconies (we have two). It's just that my country's standards are low, so yeah. :D
