Microsoft late Monday announced it is buying Nokia's smartphone and cellular handset business in a deal worth $7.2 billion.
The deal sent Finnish firm Nokia's Helsinki-listed shares zooming 44% in pre-market trading Tuesday and earlier were up close to 50%, a move reported by Bloomberg as a record advance. Microsoft shares fell around 1.5% in trading ahead of the opening bell.
As part of the deal, Microsoft will own the company which has been a leader in creating the Lumia line of smartphones that run Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. Microsoft is paying $5 billion to buy Nokia's Devices & Services unit and an additional $2.2 billion to license Nokia's patents.

I knew Nokia had to be worth more that $7.14
That title was very misleading.

Seven dollars and fourteen cents? Whoa!
Microsoft does it again! Buying stuff they don't need. Good thing sweaty ballmer is stepping down soon.

I think Google and Microsoft are trying to do what Apple has done. Have an extremely propriety OS to hardware, but allow other manufacturers to tag along. Nokia was a cheap buy considering it used to account for roughly 10% of Finland's GDP.

Their phones are rubbish lately, not as good as Samsung phones. I used to love Nokia, it was the only brand of phones I ever had. That is, until March, when I got Samsung smartphone.

I find Samsung phone especially their flagship galaxy line overrated. It uses cheap plastic, shitty touchwiz, and not even the best hardware.

Really? their wang is that far down your throat?....They put out shit and those numbers don't change that fact.....They've remained profitable only because nearly everyone is literally too entrenched and "stuck" using their software....NOT because they put out a good product....We all bought into their shit years ago and its kinda hard to kick them to the curb as much as we'd love to....So many application we use/buy are windows reliant...It's sad that we have to deal with it (in most cases)...

What does that remind me of... oh yeah, Apple.
The way I see it, what happened with Microsoft during the 90's is now happening all over with Apple; people get attached to a certain system and branch of hardware (Apple products / Microsoft compatible products) and suddenly it gets very hard to change if the company starts going into a wrong direction.

To call a business that generated revenues of roughly $70 billion two years ago shit if asinine. I agree that Microsoft's products aren't what they used to be but that doesn't change the fact that they know how to run a business successfully.

You're missing the point....If the local power company in your neighborhood has shitty service and you and everyone else are almost forced to use them thus making them billions does it make them not a shitty company because their raking in the cash?...

How is Microsoft ass? Personally I like win7. know some people who use windows phones and love them. I love the office suite. I don't get why everyone expects everything a big name company releases to be perfect, especially now when these companies are trying to bring some innovative things to their platform.

I'm actually excited about this, Windows phone layout is facking awesome.
If I were to choose I'd be tempted by a Windows phone (even with the shit-less app store) compared to Galaxy/iPhone, too bad I dont have a smartphone to begin with

I'm I the only one who actually thinks this is am opportunity for Nokia? Let's face it, they got in too late to the Smartphone market. Granted a lot people liked their phones (including me) but they are still going to develop their software (HERE Map and such) and will surely have some influence to Microsoft's Windows Phones. There might be a big market for Smartphones, but there is also a huge market for software, especially for smartphone devices. They didn't jump into the Android OS phones, but now they could actually have the opportunity to do so with apps and such, or I don't know, maybe pair with Jolla (upcoming Finnish phone manufacturer). I still hope that Microsoft will continue the Lumia design language and not ruin these phones with some stupid ideas (cough* surface RT cough*).
