Got my new laptop today and it has Windows 8 preinstalled. Can someone please tell me how to get a windows 7 layout or atleast how to enable th Start-button? It's dirving me crazy.
I'v read about 3rd-party tools, but I'd rather not use those. Is there a way to get what i want by changing the settings?

AFAIK that can only be done with mods.

Windows are going to add the start button in there next sevicepack, so the only other way is it use mods to look and feel like windows 7..

windows 8.1 is a free update that's coming very soon with alot of additions including a start button.
btw I didn't like living without a start menu at the beginning, but then i got used to it and i found the big tiles more handy that the start menu, and then I was getting BSOD very often so I rolled back to 7.

They should change the Explorer too. It's as if you have Word or Winrar open with all the bullshit at the top.

What make and model is your laptop? It's do-able, but it's a long process. I've done it on mine.

While it is true that Microsoft is bringing back the start button in Windows 8.1, the only thing it will do is open up what already opens when you press the start button on your keyboard.
My advice is to give Windows 8 a try. It has a lot of neat features that you'll notice along the way. And also, the new start menu is a bit tricky to get used to, but once you've got it, it is just as easy - if not better.

Just give it a try
Once u get used to it, u'll never go back

If u really want the old start button back:
ninite.com -> utilities -> classic start & install
This will add the start button back; yes it's safe

Still, everything doesn't have to be so big, I am accurate enough with the mouse. And smaller means you can fit more.

just get used to it, the full screen is annoying but its faster then windows 7, also the new service pack only adds a button to the current full screen start window also add the option of going straight to desktop.
i made the move and sure took me a while to get used to it but i kind of like it now i do things faster then before and the whole sharing your settings between computers feature is lovely my laptop gets the same background and skin as my computer

My only complaint on windows 8 is that I can't seem to manually adjust the live tile stacking. Some devices have 3 tiles while some have 6, and I really think 4 would be the perfect number for me but my laptop insists on having 5 tiles stacked. I get it is you're running low resolutions but c'mon, I have 1920x1080 display and I want bigger tiles!
