Verizon Phone Records Secretly Collected by Feds

The Obama administration has been quietly collecting millions of telephone records from U.S. Verizon customers under a top-secret court order first obtained in late April, according to British newspaper The Guardian.

A copy of the classified order, posted Wednesday on the newspaper's website, reveals that Verizon has been required to provide to the National Security Agency on an "ongoing, daily basis" information on all phone calls made through its systems.

Under the order, the government has obtained phone numbers of both parties on every Verizon call, the call's duration, location data and the time of day the calls were made. The order does not allow the government to listen in on the calls or obtain details of their contents.

TL;DR Verizon has been recording everyone of their customers phone calls and handing them over to the feds because they are looking for terrorist or some shit.

I love that people are actually supprised by this.

Also, I highly doubt that Verizon is the only company that does this.

That's a ton of data to sift through...99% of which is just garbage to them...and I doubt terrorists will use obvious words when discussing their plots....Also verizon isn't the only service provider people use...nor does terrorists need to use cell phones...And this move by the government shouldn't be news to anyone..including terrorists...Good luck big brother... Still though this is privacy infringement.....Where is Fiction....I need a gun...me and you start shooting at cell phone towers and communication lines lol.....

I don't like to call 9/11 an inside job, but I really could see them letting it happen just to gain more control over its citizens in the name of security.. And many other reasons. It's not like they weren't aware of what was going on.

I remember we had law called "emergency law", which extends police powers and almost suspend a person's constitutional rights, when people rebelled against the regime they removed that law, result? people are significantly less safe, criminals are free roaming doing whatever they want.. so, the morale of this is that such things won't ever affect you badly, don't start with the rights and privacy bullshit, let them do their job.

I love how the writer decided to only pick Verizon out of the bunch.
ATT, Bellsouth, Sprint, Comcast, Apple, Google, everybody has been tracking everything you do and everything you have said for over a decade now across the world.

Nobody has been bothered by it and nobody will ever be unless you're doing something you're not supposed to.

Where was the dialogue with the public and the transparency before doing this?...wouldn't that be appropriate?...So if the government thinks it is in our best interest to put certain additives into our drinking water without mentioning it that would be OK with you???..We should just "let them do their job"?

Obama: "Nobody is listening to your telephone calls"
On the heels of a series of reports detailing the U.S. government's practice of tracking private citizens' phone and internet use, President Obama on Friday sought to downplay the invasiveness of the procedure, assuring a California audience that "nobody is listening to your phone calls," and that any data tracking is governed by comprehensive oversight spanning all three branches of U.S. government.

"Nobody is listening to your telephone calls," Mr. Obama said, speaking at an event touting his health care law in California. "That's not what this program is about."

Earlier this week, the Guardian reported on a classified National Security Agency (NSA) program that involved collecting the phone records of hundreds of millions of U.S. phone customers. The Washington Post also reported Thursday night that the NSA and the FBI have been mining data from the servers of nine American internet companies, and "extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track foreign targets."

USA Today wrote:http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-05-10-nsa_x.htm?POE=NEWISVA

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.
The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

The article is from 2006

Anyways, apparently all the congressmen were briefed about it. Which is why i find some of them acting all surprised and outraged at this a bit ridiculous.
Obama kind of said fck transparency when he started pursuing terrorists. Atleast this might get some attention to some of the language in the Patriot Act

Man, I haven't hear the name BellSouth in a long time.

The thing about things like this is that people will be in an uproar about their rights and privacy for a couple months but eventually they will just quiet down again and forget about it or just accept it like they do with everything else.

Google straight up tells you that they're recording everything you search. If you use Google Chrome they're recording every site that you visit.

Verizon isn't handing over recordings of calls. They're handing over the call records (phone numbers of incoming/outgoing calls and the duration of the call). Gov't is probably just getting them so when they suspect someone of being a terrorist they can run their number through the system and find out who they are in contact with.

I see nothing wrong with this. As long as they aren't recording the actual calls why have a titty attack over it?

Im gad you draw the line somewhere, so when they cross it, you can complain too. Then someone can tell you, why have a "titty attack" over it, at least they aren't video taping us...

Point is, it's just a matter of small encroachments that lead to less freedom. Letting them get away with the little things, eventually it's something bigger. If it helps, these kind of invasive laws were a big part of the Bush administration.

So now that we all know this is happening what are we going to do to stop it?

Ohh yea nothing.
It's fun and all to bring these things up and rage about the attrocities the government commits but it does nothing to stop it. People should just stop worrying about it and roll with the punches because no matter how much you bitch on a dead forum about it nothing will change.

I am humbled by this profound truth...except about the part were "we should roll with punches"....I don't agree there.... but at the same time you are right about arguing against something most of us wont do jack about....

So if you're not going to roll with the punches than your obviously going to take a stand against it, so what's your plan?

Make a strong stand, none of that talking to your senators bullshit. Aslong as the Gov't officials have access to insider trading info and corporate money your voice will go unheard. It's human nature to be a bit greedy and when you have people waving 20k infront of your face for you to just vote no or yes on some bill your going to take it.

I don't understand why people are so concerned...
It's not like your phone records are the fed's only way of creeping into your lives.

We know it's not the only way, and they are being sued for those other ways as well.

As long as you aren't in contact with any terrorists your information isn't being looked at.

Apparently the guy who leaked it, Snouden, came out himself and is at Hong Kong atm, will probably be extradited to the US where I'm guessing he could be convicted for espionage/treason.
