Dmitry Itskov, a Russian billionaire and media mogul, is betting that money can buy eternal life.

Itskov's 2045 Initiative, which is trying to make immortality a reality, launched its own political party in Russia last week: Evolution 2045. Though Evolution 2045 is based in Russia, it aims to create "a new stage of human civilization" throughout the world.Itskov founded the 2045 Initiative in February 2011. He has brought 30 top Russian scientists on board and plans to create an international research center devoted to study immortality.

The 2045 Initiative has outlined a 30-year plan to develop the technology for human beings to transfer their consciousness into "avatars," or robots. Its self-declared ambition is to make the human race "eventually become a new species."

Of course he is.

There is no doubt in my mind that in the future immortality will be a thing or at the very least being able to live several times longer ( not in my lifetime sadly ).

Is cool that I got to see the technological revolution that we are living in right now but I being less mortal wouldve been pretty nice also. A great deal of better minds would be around with the extra time to norture assuming mind decay is dealt with but makes you wonder if we would choose to keep overpopulating like retards; no reason at all for there to be 8 billion of us.

Why not just work on stopping aging or somethin.

Anyway, if I was a billionaire i'd wanna live forever too lol. Though i'd also be putting tons of money into making a real Jurassic Park.

I thought we learned that making a real Jurassic Park was a bad idea. There's always going to be that one greedy scientist that will want to sell your research to a competitor and he'll sabotage the park and endanger you all.

Yeah, But still.. uploading your brain, doesn't make you immortal. xD

^Well, if he "uploads" his brain, it would probably "upload" his personality too, and that's what makes us what we are.

That part reminded me of Portal.

What really defines "you" is unknown.

^My mind and my way of thinking defines who I am, and those are connected with brain. Of course you whole body takes a part in defining who you are, but not really as much as your mind.

I'm sure you cannot transfer someone's consciousness.
It doesn't even make any sense!

And this does make sense? :D
Btw, why wouldn't it make sense? Brain uses electrical impulses to control the body and everything else.

I was more thinking about what is the smallest unit of you that can still be called "you". Could be the brain for some, but I don't think so myself.

ROFL Well, considering you can't feel, can't touch, can't taste. etc..
You only know because "the computer tells" that how it feel like.

No. In theory, it would send you the same electrical pulse as the nerves in your fingers send you when you touch something, so you could feel it. But that's far from being reality at the moment.

But still.. It won't be your brain.

If it's the brain that contains the consciousness, you can only take the brain and put it into a machine. But the brain itself doesn't live very ,long. And even if it does, there will be a significant loss in brain power and the person wouldn't be able to do much, if anything. Now if you somehow make a machine brain that lasts forever, then there won't be "you" in it, or any consciousness whatsoever and transferring it into the machine brain would be called magic then. So it's not so easy it seems.

The brain is just a big chemical formula, issue is it's complexity.

About uploading your brain, that machine will be just "another you" with same personality, but i dont see any chance of transferring ur consciousness also :)

Total control of the human cell where cellular activity could be delayed, suspended and re-started without cell deterioration... or the ability to copy the consciousness digitally (which seems impossible) would be two ways to increase "longevity".... I say longevity because it wouldn't truly be immortality as we'd still not be immune to dying/being terminated....
