This is a concept I made with photoshop, but can be turned into forum theme with some CSS knowledge.
thoughts?

I do like the design but I like the loading times on this website, and more images most likely won't help (depends on how it's coded)

No like : X
It's too busy and drop down menus for subforums = BAD.
I'm also not a big fan of the colour scheme and fonts :/ (mainly the top part)
The chaoticness might go away/down if you remove the transparent parts.
But I think the main problem of this design is that it's designed around looking cool rather than being a functional forum.

I like it, who uses anything besides the view active topics button anyway.

Should add this to your revised version. Just as Ryoko has done.

Me. I just click on the sections that are yellow and click on the unread post button on the threads.

That looks pretty cool, i'd prefer dark one ;d. I still use SRF Dark lol.
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=95116&hilit=dark+srfExcept for like ever now, the top green bar and couple buttons have been a mishaped cut off tinypic image not here msg.
There's also that greasemonkey script to make the side bar navigation move while scrolling pages, by stealmysoda.

Looks cool, but I really like the almost vanilla template for this forum. Fast, easy, and simple.
Maybe cause I'm just a hipster

I like the classic SRF look. Not too trendy but who gives..

the only thing i'd really be interested in would be making
the forum more mobile-friendly, not so much more fancy. i have
always really liked the simple look and feel of srf anyway
edit: with mobile friendly i mean something like this
- start screen is just all subforums (left hand menu)
- clicking a subforum opens the last 10 posts
- clicking it again will open the entire subforum
- clicking a post will open the post
- filtering out all signatures but keeping all avatars
- only a quick reply feature, not the whole editing screen
but that's just my 2 cents. i'd make a start on something like
that, have been thinking of doing so, but haven't had the time

strangelove made an interesting theme too a few years ago. I'd be down for some little changes.

I agree with your assessment of the existing SRF as well as your suggestions for a mobile friendly version....you sir are a visionary...

Is your posting style for increased mobile-friendliness as well?
