Facebook's $1 messages

One more way to get your credit card

The latest update to Facebook Messages did more than just change a few settings. It's also a sign of the social network seeking yet an opportunity to encourage impulse purchases.

Facebook, which began the year with a reputation for caring more about its users than about making a buck, is ending the year with the rollout of yet another way to try to squeeze more money from its members.

This latest money-making effort comes with a revamp of its popular Messages service -- that part of Facebook through which you can message/e-mail your "friends" and, in fact, those who aren't your friends. What's changing -- and a spokesman describes it to CNET as a "small experiment" -- is that Facebook will start charging some people for messages they want to send to people they're not friends with.

The $1 cost seems steep just to shoot someone a message, but no matter. Facebook will surely drop the price if no one uses it. But the bigger point: This latest "test" shows that Facebook, eager to prove to Wall Street that it's building a cash-generating empire, is looking for more ways to add revenue streams not tied to advertising and, importantly, is trying to get more user credit cards on file.

Have you seen Instagram? It's filled with angsty 13 year olds who think that because they have x number of followers that they're public figures now and that everyone wants a piece of their supposed fame.

This entire thing is horrible. Previously, you could make it so anyone who isn't your friend couldn't message you. I liked this system, I don't want strangers contacting me. Now anyone can message you, but the messages get filtered to a different folder. But if someone simply pays $1, it goes to your main inbox. Be prepared for a whole bunch of targeted advertisement thrown directly in your face for the low-low price of $1. If things get too bad I'll deactivate Facebook, it's service has been slowly declining over the years and this latest update is a blatant cash grab.

say you have instagram and post a photo of you....
they can give your photo away to a company that plasters your image all over cities with something like.... "I wish i wore a condom, i wouldnt have herpies if i did..."
and you cant do anything about it because you gave that image to instagram.

OR they could use you as the face of a cereal box or something and instagram can sell that image to have royalties on every box of cereal and you get nothing.

also they dont need your consent.

I wouldn't even put pics of me to Instagram if I used it.
But seriously, who (except those shitty advertisers) wants to message a random person on FB directly?
