Time for another computer thread !

My brother asked me to build him a new computer for Christmas, but I think I'm just going to give him most of my current computer parts and upgrade my computer.
My computer now is:
Case: Corsair C70
Mobo: AsRock 970 Extreme3
CPU: AMD FX-8120
Ram: Corsair XMS3 1333mhz 8GB (2x4GB)
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 6850 1GB (factory overclocked at 820mhz)
PSU: Corsair CX500
Cooler: Antec Khuler 620
I'm going to give my brother pretty much everything minus the case, hard drives, and optical drive of course. I'm going to put all of it in my old Thermaltake V3 Black Edition case.
As for upgrading my current build, I already ordered the following:
GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7870 HAWK GhZ Edition ($189.99 after reabte)
Cooler: Antec Khuler 620 ($35 after rebate)
I believe the AMD FX-8120 is going to be on sale on boxing day for $109; Corsair CX500 for $30; AsRock 970 Extreme 3 for $60, and Corsair XMS3 8GB 1660Mhz for $30. Should I buy exactly these, or are there other options that would be better suited?
And for $109, I'm pretty much dead set on the 8120, unless the 8150 is going to be on sale for under $150. Either case, I'm getting one or the other (unless you all think there's a better cpu?); so it really boils down to the motherboard that I'm going to look at; preferably one with 2 pci-e 2.0 16x slots. NCIX has the Corsair GS700 on sale for $59.99; so I think I'm going to get that as well. As for the ram, I want to try and get 16GB (2x8GB) with at least 1600mhz and CL9-10 (if there is CL9 2x8GB ram available).
Finally, my price range for mobo, cpu, ram and psu is going to be around $400 max.
*Canadian retailers only ofc

Intel i7 or get out.
No but seriously I'd get an Intel board and CPU if you are upgrading, then give the AMD board/cpu to you bro.

I honestly don't understand the difference. With that said, i'm not spending an extra 100$ for something slightly better if better at all

from an economical point of view, AMD gives better performance for less price, I recommend those:
AMD FX-8350GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3and 16 GB of ram won't add much maybe even nothing to your performance, 8 would be more than enough.

Yeah I've been looking at that board for a while, I think i'll pick it up today for 120$ and return it if I find a better cheaper board after boxing day. Front USB 3.0 header is just icing on the cake for me
http://pcpartpicker.com/ca/part/gigabyt ... a990fxaud3I would only get 16GB of ram if it was on sale and has low CAS, and for the CPU, my aim right now is the 8120 for $109, but if I find 8150/8320/8350 on sale, I'll hop on those as well.

Those AMD Bulldozer processors are not as great as an i5 even though their competitor should be the i7. If you go to a forum that knows a lot about computer hardware, you'll read the same thing.
I recommend an i5 3570k or even the non k version with a Z77 board. If you're not really a computer enthusiast then you can go with a lower end motherboard with less features like an Asus P8Z77-V LX/LK/LE. Or if you want a Gigabyte board then perhaps the GA-Z77X-UD3H/GA-Z77X-D3H. People recommend the AsRock Z77 Extreme 4 a lot for it's inexpensive price and just as many features as a Asus P8Z77-V motherboard.

Just looked at the benchmarks. That AMD CPU is about the exact same as the i5 CPU I showed you (benchmark wise). Guess you're fine.

No not really. The FX-8120 is a 8 core CPU while the i5 is 4 core, yet they perform the same. The i5 is way more efficient and doesn't need to have a bunch of cores to get to those high speeds. I'd rather have a quality product like Intel, but that's IMO.
Now for GFX cards, well, thats a different story. nVidia isn't what they used to be.

So if I got an i5 3570k, what motherboard would I get (considering my budget of 300$, but willing to flex $50)?
I've looked at every possible 100-200$ range Lga115 motherboard, and they all have like half the amount of Usbs compared to an amd board, and I couldn't find one with two pci-e 2 slots that run 16x/16x when in sli/crossfire; they're all 16x/8x.
I'm not exactly looking for some clown looking board like most of gigabytes boards either (50 shades of blue).
*this is all dependent on the 3570k dipping to the 170$ range

Don't waste money on a cooler, stock does the job just fine, do get thermal paste though. Is cheap and lowers temps by a fair amount.

I already have another Khuler 620

My only gripe about the GA-990FXA UD3 is the BIOS, the ugly ass blue screen with no mouse input.

The Asus P8Z77-V LK would be a good model. Has four USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 on the back I/O panel. Has a USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 for internal I/O connections, each of these connections support 2 ports. The Asus Z77 line of motherboards has the nice looking UEFI BIOS with mouse control.

Something around $100 board is fine. This is my board I bought which is exactly Juicy recommended as well.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131837Don't go cheap on your processor. Get something with performance and ignore the morons that say get an i7 unless you really use applications that can utilize HT for example 3d modeling. Otherwise it's not worth the extra $100.

Returned my 990FXA-UD3 for an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 -so poor

-
Getting i5 3570K.
I'm scared of screwing up the pins though
Some of the other boards I was considering were:
Asus P8Z77-V LK
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
MSI Z77A-GD65
but I think a couple of them only had 2 SATA3 6gb/s inputs; so fu
ck dat noise.
I calculated the difference between the original upgrade board I bought coupled with an FX-8320 and getting the Extreme4 and an i5 3570K is about $50 more. The power usage between the 3570K and 8320 are on 2 complete different planets; so the 50$ difference will be saved in power usage I guess

Well if Intel can give more performance with less cores, AMD can give more performance with less money, they're the same but still the amd one is cheaper.
On the other hand when you have a bigger budget and you worry about the performance more than the money, then Intel is your best friend.

Uh intel CPUs are just overall better in almost every category besides everyday facebook use. Then any budget CPU would be fine. A higher clock, cores, and so on doesn't necessarily mean a better efficient CPU. I forgot the exact reason, but it has to deal with pipelining if I remember.
It depends how much of a budget CPU you want then yeah, AMD is better. Considering this is a forum based off a game I'd assume we're not going build a toaster of a computer for gaming. If it's everyday use then sure use a $50 CPU. It'll perform fine on facebook.

I've seen the benchmarks between 8320/8250 vs 3570K/3770K. The main difference about performance is that Intel is better than AMD with games (but not that significant of a difference), but AMD completely blows Intel out of the water with 3D rendering/video processing/etc. mostly multimedia things which fully utilize the 8 cores. Note that Photoshop actually performs better with Intel though.
The other difference is power consumption, the 8320 and 8350 cores are the most power hungry cores on the market right now. The Visheras are 125W cpus and the Ivy Bridges are 77W cpus.
The obvious difference is the price. Crysis said it best; if you have the budget, get an Ivy Bridge, but if not, the Vishera family is completely acceptable.

They're all acceptable honestly until you get into hours of rendering. That's where it really matters.
I haven't followed CPUs in a couple years so I didn't even know AMD actually created something useful beyond the blunder of Bulldozer lol.

Most processors you buy come with it's own factory cooler to be used with the processor. Sometimes the factory coolers don't perform as great or computer enthusiasts want to overclock their processor and because a factory cooler can only handle so much, people purchase an aftermarket cooler to fulfill their needs.

Yeah pretty much you can't overclock with stock but then again there isn't a real need to do so.
