after Obama Reelection.
It’s traditional for Americans to threaten to move to France or Canada when their candidate loses, but this year some disappointed voters are implementing a different plan.
In the wake of the Nov. 6 election, petitions seeking to secede from the union have been filed on behalf of 23 states on the White House website. Most of the petitions contain the same wording and ask to withdraw “peacefully” from the United States in order to form independent governments.
Critics describe the effort as a bit of an overreaction. “Anyone who wants their state to secede from the union is someone whose brain has already seceded from their body,” said John Andrews, director of the conservative Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University.
Still, the White House may have to take the requests seriously. According to the website, any petition receiving 25,000 online “signatures” on the “We the People” page within 30 days of posting will receive a review by the appropriate executive department and a response from a White House staffer.

California isn't on that list. That's all that concerns me at the moment.
It's good to see the public joining together in a sense to get shit done.

most deep south states take in more federal dollars than they give back in tax revenue. So them leaving the union would actually help improve the government's fiscal situation. It would also make it easier for obama to get things done since a bunch of republicans would have to leave the senate and the house.

Just an update..
Residents In All 50 States File Petitions To Secede From United States
As you may have heard, residents in most of these United States have used the "We The People" online petition tool -- previously best known as the primary method that weed enthusiasts used to communicate with high-ranking members of the White House staff -- to file requests to secede from country in the wake of the presidential election, because apparently not everybody got what they wanted out of America's traditional participatory democracy.
"Didn't we try that once before?" asked South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. Indeed, yes, it was tried before, by South Carolina in December of 1860. Since that date, states opting for secession have a 100% failure rate in splitting from the Union, and that dismal record was amassed long before the United States had a fleet of aerial drone weapons that could be piloted by remote control.

I'm pretty sure these secession petitions are about getting state powers back from the central government, not a bunch of butthurt hillbillies.. Also this isn't an uncommon event. Yeah lets go back over into the marijuana legalization thread and cheer on Colorado and Washington, then talk shit about people wanting the power back in the state's hands, in this thread.

pretty much. Also, the US government made it illegal for states to secede from the union after the end of the civil war. So any discussion about it ends right there because its legally impossible.

That doesn't matter. It's as silly as making revolutions illegal because that doesn't mean they won't happen.

Well yeah. I don't mean that it wouldn't ever happen just because there is a law that says you can't. But that suggests the states would try force secession on their own without some kind of process between them and the federal government and so the idea that the president would send in federal troops to prevent secession and end up fighting a state national guard is a story thats so wild and out of this world it would probably never happen.
Anyone who takes a serious look at secession would conclude that its just about the dumbest idea ever. The state would have to set up everything on their own from currency production to airspace regulation. That costs tons of money. Everyone hates on big government when they are enjoying so many services that the federal government provides.

Jstar1 where did you learn your American history/politics/law? We got a long just fine with state's rights without the overly controlling central government getting involved in every aspect. Most if not all founding fathers were against such an over reaching government. To the smart people saying times have changed and we shouldn't listen to those old farts... Do you really think socialism and communism are the new kids on the block? You think history didn't have tyrant to set examples?
Us haters of big government don't dislike the fact they provide a service that benefits people... We dislike the fact that service can be done better in every way by other means. Having more government in our lives has not made us better. I'm sure you're the same that goes out and bitches that gays can't marry, and corporation run things, but ask for more government... Its just stupidity..

There are petitions for deporting anyone that signed a petition to secede from US, and another one to strip citizenship off, lmao.
And anyone can sign the petitions regardless if the petition is about your state or not. gogogogogogog
Also most of the founding fathers were for state rights, but after being elected they pushed to increase the pwoer of the federal government. Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Franklin etc. also Alexander Hamilton, one of the biggest voices for federal power, is considered one of the most important founders, had the biggest influence on G. Washington.
Just look at the republican presidents in the 1900s. Those that supported an active fed. gov't were successful; Eisenhower (interstate highway), Reagan (fckin defense), T. Roosevelt (actually a liberal muslim communist by todays standards; progressive & broke monopolies). Now lets look at the "weak fed. gov't" presidents; Harding, Coolidge, Hoover. Did nothing at all, except ofc cause the Great Depression.

You're wrong about this ok? American law does not permit states to secede on their own. Theres a supreme court decision called texas vs. white where the court basically said that states do not have the right to unilaterally leave the union. This happened after the civil war ended.

Where did I mention states still had the right to legally secede?

In the past few years, there has been a certain amount of talk and people promoting secession from the United States. Mostly, it's code for “a Democrat won the presidency and we're angry over it.” The cost of
secession to the states where most individuals advocate for it would be disastrous.
