Speeding Ticket

So, there I was the other night, about 5 minutes from home when I got pulled over for doing 68 in a 55. Ticket is like $240, and it's my first ticket. Now here's the deal..
1.) My speedometer was working earlier that day (Went to class early in the morning, then on my way home from dinner at my brothers house, it got stuck at 20mph). So I had no way to tell how fast I was going.
2.) The cop wrote my court date for January 11th, 2012. 2012 has already passed. It should've been 2013.
Now my question is to you speedsters, is there a way I can somehow get out of this ticket? If so, how?

Face it, pay it, learn from your mistakes, call it bad luck, or what ever... You can usually figure out how fast you're going with traffic around you. No traffic at that time? Oh well.. 240$ isn't the end of the world, i've had much much worst, I faced it now i'm facing my problems thats it. End of story.

Well it depends, I know that under some circumstances you can get away with it because your speedometer wasn't working. You'd have to pay the court costs, but you may get off of paying $240.
It really depends on the judge.

There was no traffic around, or else I wouldve done that. And while youre right, $240 isn't a ton of money in the grand scheme of things. It is to a college student.

Maybe laws a different but how does that work? You drove 200 in a 50mph zone, yes but my speedometer wasn't working! Oh ok sir no problem then! have a nice day.
Here you aren't even allowed to start your engine if your meters aren't working properly but like I said, I guess that could be different from other countries.

but here you also get a 100 euro fine for farting while driving, so maybe that's different from other countries too.

$240 for a 13MPH difference, wow.
In Ontario, if we were 10~KMH above the speed limit, depending on the time of the day, police don't care, but if we do get ticketed, it's sub $100

Oh and yeah, about the speedometer thing, Im pretty sure same rule applies here. But wtf was I supposed to do when it stopped working mid-drive? Just pull over and call a tow truck? That doesn't make sense.
And yes this is a double post. But I'm on my phone, so deal with it.

Laws do differ quite a lot, if you're going 13 over and your speedometer wasn't working without other traffic around to gauge how fast you're traveling there is a chance he could have the charge dropped.
I've had 2 friends here in Nashville get their charges dropped over a busted speedometer over the years, sometimes you just get lucky.
Now if you were going 200 in a 50 you can kiss your car, license, and freedom goodbye.
We're in Tennessee, the cops and laws aren't very tight. For example my neighbor went 8 months on expired tags without a single warning. The US [except Cali] is pretty lenient on the car laws.

I remember reading something about having the ability to fight your tickets in the US. You can go to court and see if the officer shows up. If he does show up you change your plead to guilty again, and if he doesn't show up the charges will be dropped because he isn't there.
A lot of officers supposedly don't have the time to come to court again, so you walk free. Not sure how this works with court costs.

Go to court and tell the truth, it will at least get reduced.

I'm confused about the date he wrote. I could under stand November the 1st 2012, but not January 11th 2013. You're probably just reading it wrong.
Also, you pay what the city sets the ticket. They can be as low as 50 bucks or as high as 300 bucks just for doing 5 over. Usually tickets are set at 1-10mph 11-20mph 21-30mph etc. So if you're like me and get a ticket by a douche for 5mph over (which I wasn't) it can show up as if you were doing 10mph and you have to pay the same fee. Ironic thing is, it was in a city where I'm also a volly firefighter in as well...

It says jan 11th 2012. (which already passed).
I'd take a picture of the ticket an post it for you, but that would require effort.

Yeah I know, I just don't understand why he'd set a date that far ahead(if he meant 2013) or that far back(unless you were driving a Delorean)

Discrepancies like that on a ticket where I am from is defaulted to being invalid and gets tossed out...Ask around to see if the same applies to your case...Show it to a lawyer...you might be surprised..

For the date being wrong it depends on the judge. Few would throw it out along with your speedometer. Also 3 months? wat

Yeah, I know. I'm surprised it was so late as well.
I feel like the cop was a newbie though. So eh.
And he didn't mention the speedometer in the ticket. So yeah.

We shall see. I plan on hiring and flying in my Brother-In-Law from WY, who graduated from Harvard. We'll fight to repeal this thing.

Legally you don't have to pay the ticket if there missing/wrong information, at least in Canada that's how it is. Fight it, see if you win.

It's not worth it. You'll spend more flying him out assuming it's not a 5minute plane ride. Either way you'll piss off the judge that just wants to move as fast as possible through everybody. Not worth it unless you want to see you brother in law.
Just ask him over the phone and explain the details. If he knows everything already then I'd like to know what he said.

Depends on what is wrong on the ticket in murrica. Different car model? Thrown out. Date? Eh I'm not entirely sure since I've never had that happen or heard of it happening to someone I know. in fact I've never gotten a ticket.. well by a police. Turning on red without a complete stop when I was a wee baby driver ;_; Damn cameras
