Is it still a hit and run if people are kicking your door and jumping on your roof? Isn't self defense applicable here?

what's the story behind all this? The way I see it, the cab driver was just trying to get himself to safety, those guys think they are concrete walls. Are they speaking french or something?

MONTREAL—A grotesque scene captured on video early Sunday of a taxicab running over a young man in Montreal has led to charges being laid against the driver.

The driver appeared in court Monday afternoon while the 23-year-old victim, who is in stable condition in hospital, could also be charged, along with another man, police said.

The video shows a taxicab driving wildly while a group of young men violently attacks the vehicle.

The incident happened before 4 a.m. Sunday in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont Royal borough, when an argument broke out between the cab driver and his clients.

If the commentary by the person filming from a nearby building is to be believed, the conflict began when one of the men slammed the taxi door too hard.

The video begins with the car, a Toyota Camry, making a circle as the 23-year-old man kicks the driver’s side door. The arguing escalates and harsh words are exchanged. Someone throws what appears to be a broken piece of the vehicle at the cab’s back window. Other people enter the scene and begin to argue with the driver.

The young man then kicks the driver’s side door again, twice. The cabbie reverses, and the man kicks the door again. The driver then moves forward aggressively, narrowly missing some of the people assembled. “He’s sick,” someone can be heard saying.

A different man in a white baseball cap kicks the passenger door, pounds on the trunk and then hops on to and stomps on the roof and windshield.

It’s at this point that the 23-year-old, positioned at the front of the car, is hit and thrown to the ground as the cab hits the accelerator. Both the front and the back of the car can be seen to bounce as the tires roll over his body.

The cabbie does not stop. He continues to flee the scene.

Guercy Edmond appeared in court where he was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, hit-and-run and dangerous driving. The 47-year-old taxi driver will remain in prison until his bail hearing on Wednesday.

Another 42-year-old man has been released from custody on a promise to appear should police decide to charge him.

The young man in hospital could also face charges, said Const. Raphaël Bergeron of the Montreal Police Service.

Yeah they're speaking french (Montreal).

Thing is, I still think running over someone is overkill for "self-defense".

You think he knew he was running over him? In panic mode anything is doable, would you rather get your face punched like no tomorrow or running away?

Yes he did. You're gonna tell me he didn't think of the consequences of pressing down on the pedal when you have so many people around your car?

Even a punch in the game wouldn't justify running over someone.

Indeed!
Seriously, what the taxi driver did "was clearly NOT self defense" And he could have easily driven away.

I'd like to see your reaction when you got a baboon jumping on your windshield and smashing your car windows, i'll film you while its happening... Come on guys you're being stupid, the 3 drunk guys (including the camera man) had been racially insulting the black taxi driver before the event. I seriously hope the guy is OK but too fucking bad for jumping on a car. Never mess with big metal shit. Never.

so this guy runs his 1,000 kg car on top of some guy.
Unless he is literally hitler I see no reason to farking run somebody over.

Yes because telling some people who are smashing on your car to please move will totally work. The driver had every right to do everything in his power to got out of that violent situation, and if one of the idiots was in the middle of the Farking street and got hit, sucks to be him, don't be in the middle of the Farking street trying to attack someone in their car.

Kk no.

No point in arguing furthermore if you're oblivious to the fact that running him over was overkill. In this situation I would of do anything but run him over. Worst case scenario I'd put up a fight. And when did they say any racial slurs? (I speak french fluently)

Before the video, read the whole article

Oh and edit: they were 3 drunk guys, you would really put up a fight against 3 people?

double edit: I watched the video again, did you see how many people were surrounding the taxi? He would have been beat (not to death but close). It was a stupid fucking drunk idiot who thought he was god.

That put him in his place, and serves the others as a life lesson.

implying that the only option was to run somebody over.
I honestly don't know why he didn't just drive away at first. I'm guessing cuz he stupid and felt compelled to continue aruging and then it escalated and the taxi driver went ape-shit stupid and purposely ran the poor SOB over. It was 100% possible to just drive away without running any of those tools over.

I wouldn't really call that a violent situation. at least not directly for the taxi driver. Maybe I would if the car had feelings. I don't think the guy jumping on the car was the hulk posing a huge threat to the driver. At most the car would be heavily dented.
