http://sleepyti.me/Works by calculating sleeping cycles (90mins). Apparently if you wake up at the start/end of a cycle, you'll feel fresh (Had the feeling before). If you wake up during the middle of a cycle, you wake up all grumpy.
Giving it a try tonight. Must be down by 12:30 AM

Sleep doesn't work in continuous cycles of 90 minutes each. While it's true that sleep is divided in stages of REM and non-REM sleep who follow each other, the duration of the stages isn't a constant.

According to various..sources, there are cycles that last anywhere from 90 to 110 minutes, and the time right after REM sleep is a period where you are only lightly sleeping. I assume this is the time when waking up would be most beneficial. Of course sleep is still vastly misunderstood, but this is what I gather from various google terms.
The 90 minute cycle is somewhat crucial to lucid dreaming. A certain method of inducing lucid dreams involves waking up directly after a REM period has ended which is noted to be at 4.5 hours into sleep or 6 hours (note the 90 minute factor), and then going to bed shortly after that. Of course that's not to say the cycle isn't different for everyone, which is why strictly 90 minutes is indeed 'wrong'. There's also the point that REM starts off in much shorter periods of time in earlier sleep cycles..and so on. It's a very interesting topic nonetheless..

90 minute sleep? That's fucking nuts. When I nap, I don't wake up for another 3 hours at least.

No guys. You sleep in cycles. If you wake up at the wrong point in your cycle you will not feel refreshed. Waking up at the right time within your cycle will make you feel more rested.
The timer tries to calculate an optimal time of being asleep and waking up with respect to your cycle. The idea is that you can sleep less and still wake up refreshed and on time.
The 90 minutes indicates one 'sleeping cycle'.
My roommate has used this and has had mixed results. Never any worse than just regular morning tiredness so it's worth a short at the very least.

Physiologically it doesn't matter, psychologically it might matter a lot so everyone should try it a few times and see how it goes.

Uhh... I don't remember what time I fell asleep... but I am sure was around 1 am... then I randomly woke up at 5 ish.. so...
1:00am -> 2:30am -> 4:00am -> 5:30am (I woke up, fell asleep again) -> 7:00 ->8:30 (woke up and getting ready for work)
And guess what, unlike other days, I wasn't feeling that tired at all :O

Doing this for a long time will probably get you killed.

^ Yeah.. I agree with you!

It may be worth trying.. but I'm pretty sure it won't work every time you try.

Based on what knowledge =s?
There is a LOT of discussion around changing sleep patterns. You can change the time it takes your body to enter REM sleep and therefore change the amount of time you need to sleep greatly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleepRead up before discounting it to something that will 'get you killed'. =\

Sleeping for 3 hours in a 24 hours period is not the same as sleeping multiple times in a 24 hours period. Sleeping that less is not healthy and can damage your health a lot if you do it for a long period of time. Not sleeping for 48 hours will just kill you faster.
Speaking of sleep, it's 3:35 at night atm so I'd better get to bed.

I go to sleep every working night at 8:30pm and wake up at 5am. I don't know much about this sleep cycle business, but as soon as that alarm goes off I'm usually pretty darn awake. Unless I have had a pretty sleep deprived weekend (which I try to avoid) than I wake up feeling great. Maybe I'm doing something right or maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I see no need to try change anything.

I've read somewhere that you can actually "hack" your sleeping times and manage to get the same level of resting in 3 hours as you normally do in 6-8. Not sure if it was 100% true/scientifically accurate but the article came up with very reasonable arguments.
