Foreign Accents

I have got a question and I'm curious to see your answers.

So, basically my question is... would you like to have a foreign accent while speaking the language of the country you live in right now?

For example, me, I have a mixed accent of Spanish + Chinese while I speak in English here in Canada. I don't really like having an accent and even though people around me say it is nice to have a foreign accent, I would rather not have an accent or have a neutral accent.

What about you guys?

I'm a spanish guy with chinese parents (half/half) and they also say my accent is neutral (or accentless lol) And no, at first they think I am full chinese because of the accent and my looks but the accent that comes with my english is from the Spanish cause my main language is Spanish.
I am trying to talk more fluently aka to assimilate the american accent or something like that.
I am diggin' british too, just for fun.

I don't think there's any accent in the Netherlands that I would want to have. In the Netherlands accents are generally for the farmers, new/poorly assimilated immigrants or the goddamn 'Limburgers' who actually still fall in both categories.
In the Netherlands I see an accent as a sign of stupidity rather than something I'd want to have.

Little french accent here when I speak in English (living in a english province right now). I find it more annoying than anything else when it comes to pronouncing certain words :( It's not heavy enough to be le sex animal :soosad:

Bro, that's like blatant racism.

I'd love an accent simply because I have the generic US English accent.
Like maybe a south african accent or something.

I actually like girls with the Liburg accent in the Netherlands. In some way it sounds kinda of sexy if the girl is sexy too :D

Also I'm originally from Iraq, but I don't think I have an accent. I learned the Dutch language very fast at a rather young age. I'm better at Dutch then any of my friends I know. I finished Dutch at VWO with a fcking 9 8)

I explicitly said new or poorly assimilated immigrants to prevent someone from whining about racism. Otherwise I discriminate equally among the retarded, don't worry!

I find Dutchmen with a heavy farmer accent far more stupid then newly arrived immigrants. I used to live in Uithuizen(Groningen) and it was fcking hard to understand the vast majority over there. Their accent is that heavy and ugly, it's just annoying to listen to them lol. My parents now live in the Achterhoek, also a farmer's area. Their accent is sh1tty too.

Screw Limburg, I agree with that, but dont hate on Maastricht, son. A very own dialect should not be related to stupidity. Ex. we´ve got Maastrichts (Mestreechs), and it's more a sign of our own culture. But hey, you Hollanders thinking like this about Limburg like this, proves me that you guys are still as arrogant as I thought you were. Them people above the river...

Don't worry guys, all with accents are discriminated regardless of color, beliefs, religion and culture. I can say that new immigrants have a potential to not be retarded, but unfortunately their accent and equal discrimination force me to render them retarded for the time being to keep things fair. :)

And of course, Mestreechs is completely different. Everyone from above the river can clearly distinguish a difference between limbolala and Mestreechs, don't worry bro we got you covered!

actually, your view on that is the retarded thing. I dare you to move to another country at this age and learn to speak a language fluently without an accent.

Most immigrants with an accent are ones who came to Holland when they were a bit older, like 16/17+. Almost all immigrants that came here when they were still young don't have an accent.

It has nothing to do with retardness.

No that's the thing, a lot of them actually do. The most annoying thing is that they do it on purpose. When they work in shops they speak normal, but on the streets they use it all the time for no good reason. It's retarded.
Of course this doesn't go for all of them, but I've seen a few.

That's called streetlanguage and I hate it with every fiber of my being. It has nothing to do with accent or being foreign because I know alot of Dutch people who use that streetlanguage as well.

It's just retarded boys and girls who think they are tough for speaking that way.

unfortunately it's roots do lie in the badly integrated immigrants :/

No, I would not like to have an accent. Here in Denmark, just as woutR said about Holland, people with accents are usually the farmers. There isn't much diversity in the Danish language though, probably due to the size of the country.
That being said, I would hate to have an accent like some of the immigrants here have. I guess the danish language is really hard to learn. At least so it would seem, since very few immigrants ever learn to speak the language "correctly".

I would like to have a more neutral English accent though. Probably a stereotype American accent, or eventually a short amount of British accent :)

Yet, the irony is, that you DO have an accent, you stupid fuck.

My accents for SRF, in both languages (turn volume down a bit):

http://soundcloud.com/dvanha/accents-for-srf

Et le soleil est plus brûlant que les oiseaux
Et dans le ciel, I miss you so
A souvenir, a rendez-vous
Des fleurs, des fleurs, des fleurs for you
Je tu le manques, sans toi I can't
Et sous la pluie, I feel sorry
Je suis perdu, here without you
And I'm crazy, seul à Paris

To be on topic with the above... **** YEAH WOUTERS

Yea I sound like dom too kinda ish not so much the voice but how french sounds / english but I grew up learning english at 8 years old from various teachers that each had different nationalities: American, Syrian, New Zealand, Scottish, Swedish, Lebanese, Canadian, Irish, British, American/Turkish.... So I have ended up mixing all those to make a neutral english accent, yet maybe it has become a bit more "french" ever since I came back to Montreal in 2008 since I speak more french than in Dubai... (Still go to an english school)

Nope, I like speaking w/o an accent. I don't mind accents unless they get in the way of what the speaker is trying to say, accents add a bit of flair.

Here to add some more fuel to the fire...

All I have is a really big distaste for Dutch accents. That's all. Foreigners have accents, and I understand why they do, but I still dislike it. This is of course unreasonable of me, but it does not mean I am a racist or support the PVV, dom.
There are some things in life I hate that are unreasonable -I despise overly energetic happy people, for example- but I'm not a racist. (Except for Limburgers, of course)
I really don't see why everyone is overreacting to this so much. Some serious whine over absolutely nothing.

Btw wtf is your problem Lempi? What am I writing that's causing so much offense to you? I become a "stupid ****" over absolutely nothing. Why don't you just leave if all you can do is spew bullshit and draw wrong conclusions?

My initial point was on farmers and poorly assimilated immigrants. Why don't you guys care that I call all the farmers retarded? Farmers not worth anything? I think you guys are Farking racist for only caring about foreigners and not the farmers!
Seriously, when in 6+ years have I ever been a racist or a PVV simpatico? Never. I just hate the shit out of accents. Hate me for that, but don't make me out to be something I'm not...

Do you consider Brabants an accent? I mean, Brabants is just as far away from ABN as Gronings or Limburgs, yet we're not really farmers and house one of the best technical universities over here (which I will be attending soon :dope: )

I wouldn't like to have an accent myself, but i like some accents with some languages. I like how Jamaicans, Australians, Scots and Brits(not as much as the ones mentioned before) speak english for example.

This.

Being Portuguese I have a weird accent when speaking English, especially when I actually try to speak with as least of an acccent as possible. I also suck at impersonating accents, which is something I wish I was good at since I'd love to impersonate British and Jamaican accents.
