Re: KONY 2012
I've read reports about the LRA a few years back. One of the most disturbing ones was a personal account by a child who escaped from their training camps. She revealed a lot about their brutal methods of indoctrination and punishment for trying to escape. One involved forcing the children to behead one boy for trying to escape from camp; they were forced to toss his head several times to stimulate "playing" and then left his decapitated corpse to decompose in public sight as a reminder to others. Sick.
Also...if you happen to pass by their territory, take note never to ride a bicycle on the day of "Sabbath" or you might find a machete hacking away your legs.
Saw the video..great find man.

Re: KONY 2012
I will post the exact same thing I posted on Facebook about it. My opinion may be very naive, hypocritical, unjustified rah rah rah but frankly I really don't care about that. My opinion is based on the reactions of people whom I know personally and are a reflection on both their daily state of mind and the way they have handled this "event".
MrTwilliger on the Facebooks wrote:Now don't get me wrong, I'm not "that" much of an arrogant prick. But I really dislike this whole Kony thing is becoming a bit of a fad. Don't like to me, we all know this sort of abuse goes on in the world. From third world countries to first world ones like our own people are being abused, neglected, raped, mistreated and exploited. It's happened since the dawn of time and will happen till the end of it too. Yet, from my own observations, despite everyone having this knowledge we only seem to care when it's directly in our faces. Take away the cameras and what happens? No one gives a shit. People still starve, people are still neglected and lives continue to be ruined. So hell, maybe I am just a prick, but it seems like people only give a shit when it suits them well to.
Just a very cynical and anti-humanity thought.

Re: KONY 2012
Be that as it may, Twil, I'll take a note from Machiavelli and say that in this scenario, the ends justifies the means. However repugnant and ridiculous it may be that such atrocities give birth to a fad, the aim here to promote awareness and influence the people in power to do something about it. Even if it's just in the form of some half-assed military security line, a relatively minute amount of funding, or a tiny sanctuary in Uganda, it still makes a difference. I'm not sure if this movement will be enough to truly force hands to put a stop to Kony's reign but at least some good can and has come out of it.
As far as truly caring about what happens to these people, you're right, even though we know about it, without the cameras, the posters, the t-shirts, the bracelets, and the fad, no one really gives a shit. It reminds me of something I heard from the movie Hotel Rwanda: people see the footage on their TV and say "oh my God that's horrible" and then they go on eating their dinner. Cynical and hateful but it is the reality most of us are afraid to admit because it includes us and our inaction. We may be well-educated about it or some of us may even be bothered to take a few seconds to pray for them, but between watching Seinfeld, work, and surfing ebay for a new table lamp, deep down, we just don't feel like honestly giving two shits about what happens across the ocean. Hell, we barely even care about what occurs in our own neighborhoods and we're talking about sending money to fucking Africa?!
Well, Twil, that's why we need this type of publicity. I don't care if people have to bullshit themselves into believing that they care as long as it gets the job done. It doesn't matter whether it's a fad or an honest passion-driven revolution as long as it generates funding and mass support. If it makes politicians' heads turn and gets military power deployed, then I'm all for it. Why support it if I know it's just a fad? Because simply being cynical and criticizing it accomplishes less.

I don't exactly get your point. Even if "we" only started caring when it was directly in our faces, it doesn't make the whole thing a fad. I mean at the end of the day, we're still raising awareness on the situation. Giving a shit about this whole Kony thing doesn't exactly suits us in any particular way? We're not gaining anything from it. If anything, this is another case of "faith in humanity restored". Something that doesn't directly affect us but we still care about. Just seems (to me), that you're hating on it because its now mainstream.

Obviously this "bastard" needs to be stopped... but there are 100s more like him all over the world
and I can bet they won't do anything about them.

Again, so what? It doesn't falsify (for lack of better words) the Kony2012 situation. And I can bet that if these other "bastards" are brought upon public eye like Kony, then they to will be known for their actions.

Re: KONY 2012
Almost every single one of my Subscriptions on Youtube liked this video and I seen it in my news feed. So I was like O.O must watch this. Over 600k likes in 24 hours. That's fucking Awesome. This can't be ignored now. I remember a couple years ago seeing the first video this guy put out and it didn't get much attention.
If you watched the video, you would know it's not about the money. This guy has traveled to Uganda many times and put his life on the line. If anything it shows that a few people can make a difference for thousands. All they ask is for a couple dollars. Imagine if every adult person in the US alone gave up $10 one time.

Come on people. Its nice and all that it raised awareness (even though you should have already known this happens around the world not only in uganda) but dont just donate and follow a cause blindly based on a 30min video. Gotta love the human race.

Re: KONY 2012
The amount of stupidity in this forum is too damn high.
You don't have to care about their "movement", the point of the video was to spread the word about Kony, and it did that very effectively. You don't need to vandalize the streets and protest like a twat, you just need to show your support to keep the small amount of troops in Africa to help the local military catch Kony.
And for all you people saying "blah blah there will always be another derp derp", if this campaign is successful, it is a message to all others that if the people of the world really stand together, they can actually make a difference and stop these war criminals.
