'Team Frankenstein' launch bid to build a human brain

Post by *BlackFox »

within decade.
A team of scientists has assembled in Switzerland and Germany to pursue a unique goal - the building of a computer model of a human brain. Called the Human Brain Project - but perhaps inevitably dubbed 'Team Frankenstein' in the media - it is in discussion with the EU for a £1billion grant.Scientists claim success may lead to cures for various diseases like Parkinson's.
It could also lead to intelligent robots and supercomputers which would dwarf those currently in existence

I hate when people who believe in God says artificial/replication science will fail

But I also hate when people say we can do things when we don't have the knowledge/technology

I think this is highly possible for this to work

I hate when people overestimate themselfes. We're a lightyear away from fully understanding the brains, let alone 'replicate' it.

While this is true, it doesn't take away the fact that the very act of attempting to replicate it won't give us a large insight in the way it functions. It will also open a path for greatly improved AI, a completely new generation of computers and a load of other things. For just a billion, the investment will definitely pay for itself.

I personally would prefer them to use the money to help less fortunate societies but it is unrealistic of me to ask science and technology to wait for a better world before it can move ahead. It's also not my place to tell the people who are investing their money into this project what they should be doing with their money instead. I'd be wasting my time on both fronts.

It's not that people don't want it to succeed, but they ask for 1.6 billion dollar. That is too much taxmoney to spend on this project for now, especially if you consider the harsh financial circumstances we're in now. Whether the end result is succesful is not certain at all. Do you know how much 1.6 billion dollar is? Do you know how many other scientific projects you can finance with that? Until we know more about the human brain, I do not support this project. They should start with smaller projects, like trying to fully understand and 'replicate' certain parts of the brain and see how that works out. If all goes well they can start thinking about 'replicating' the whole brain.

It's not some private party's money they're asking for, but money of the taxpayers. People shouldn't become too enthusiastic about it just because it's potentially groundbreaking. You have to stay realistic and spent the money of the taxpayers wisely.

And by the sound of it, the pharmacutical industry is the one that will profit the most of it, so why don't they pay for the research?

Most human brains I interact with are filled with stupidity, racism, ignorance and hypocrisy. Hell, even my own brain is comprised of pretty much just those things. Why on earth would anyone one would to replicate something like that? :banghead:

On a more serious note I think it would be an interesting project and would love to see the research progress, if its eventually successful I could see unprecedented possibilities for it.

If they use this one billion to save poor people ot whatever reason it would be better, they say the brain is really hard to understand it, so if u cant understand something how r u donna create/replicate it?

our computers arent advanced or fast enough to build a brain replicate. the "ai brain" would be far to slow even if it was accurate. The data storage the brain has would be far higher and faster recall then a solid state hard drive. computers are far far behind the speed of a brain.

If you use light year as a measurement of time, and not for distance which is what a lightyear is, then you shouldn't comment on science articles.

I'm definitely interested in this project.

From my point of view, a lot of people are limited by what
they think is possible. One of the ways we have achieved a
large portion of technological advancements is by setting
a certain goal and working towards it, stretching boundaries
of what is possible. Aiming for something which is such a
challenge as trying to replicate the human brain will come
with vast research projects and field trials. To me it doesn't
really matter if they in the end manage to do exactly what
they are aiming for. I think this project can activate and
motivate people all over the world to try and get a better
understanding of the human brain, trigger people to push
harder for technological innovations, etc. Right now it seems
key to me to make people understand what the benefits
are of the process, not so much of achieving the goal of
replicating a human brain. But that's just my 2 cents..

It's an expression in Dutch which I directly translated to English. Thanks for being the smartass and stating the obvious, like I didn't know a lightyear stands for the distance light travels in a year.

Bunch of fcking retards filling up this thread trying to be the smartass rather then to discuss it with some arguements and respect. Gaige has to bring in God when no one ever mentioned God. Azillius is the biggest retard of this forum while he thinks he's the smartest guy. And MrJoey, come with fcking arguements rather then being the fcking smartass about lightyears and whatnot. From all posts I've read there are only 2 or 3 which come with valid arguements. You don't necessarily have to agree with them, but atleast they explain their opinion. SRF is starting to get annoying again. Everytime I think we reached some sort of point where everyone has outgrown his arrogance and can actually discuss in a normal manner, retards like you prove otherwise. I would like to discuss anything in a good manner where we come with actual arguements rather then play it personal.

But I guess it's too much to ask, so fck all of you :)

Some of you are acting so ignorant it's unreal. Think about humans in general over time, how could we have developed into such a technologically advanced race if nobody dared to challenge the limits of what we know and can do?
This is just yet another example of a group of pioneers trying to advance us, we would be unwise to not help them.
heroo wrote:I hate when people overestimate themselfes. We're a lightyear away from fully understanding the brains, let alone 'replicate' it.

This is exactly the attitude that threatens to bring down advancement. How else do you expect people to understand the brain unless projects like these are performed? Doing nothing certainly isn't going to advance our knowledge of the brain is it?

The scientists and researchers working with the Human Brain Project believe that if they secure the funding, they will be able to replicate mankind's most vital organ in 12 years.

I really want to read their proposal for the 1 bil grant.

I find it hilarious that you find yourself qualified to decide whether or not this grant is worthwhile when you most definitely have very little education in the field compared to those who are backing the project. To make such claims as 'we don't understand the brain', or as someone else said 'use this one billion to save poor people' is plain ignorant.

Tell me, through what means did you come up with the conclusion that it would be a waste of money? Do you have degrees in neuroscience, cognitive science or anything even slightly related? Why do you think that YOU know better than multiple scientists who devote their lives to the field?

While your concerns COULD be legitimate, the basis on which you derive them is ignorance and pseudo science at best..

Who says they want or need to know EVERYTHING, knowing something that we don't know which could help us in the future now is better than nothing. You're ignorance is astounding.
