What do you think about SOPA? It will destroy the internet, if you post anything you don't own you get sued.

I believe that it will never get Fully functional, the internet is just too big that you hardly can find who is the original poster.

Furthermore, Noone owns the internet, so they can't just put rules for something they don't own, it is like you setting rules in a street that is (obviously) not yours, hardly anyone will follow those rules unless they agree with them or feel in danger if they don't follow them.

I'm going to get a lot of flames here and some of what I say is biased and possibly a bit naive, but I'll share none the less.

I don't believe what they are doing or the way they are going about it is right. Let me just plain out state that from the start. If I had the right to vote, I'd vote no. The bill is easily manipulated, is full of flaws and just plain out won't work. But, at the same time, I see why they are doing it and think that a portion of people complaining about it are the ones to blame. Copyright infringement is a big issue and, despite countless "justifications" people may use, it's costing a lot of industries a lot of money. I don't blame the providers either, I blame the users for partaking in it. If people didn't acquire different kinds of mediums in less than legal ways, than it wouldn't be made available. And now, after years of abusing the system worry free, people are starting to complain and get in arms about their way of life being taken away from them. Somehow the words "serves you right" just pop into my head.

With all of that said, please note that I'm not saying the act is entirely justified. I believe that personal identity and security is at risk and that's not something I agree with at all. I also believe that their is a large potential for certain interest groups to block/unblock specific websites through corrupt means. But if we had an ideal world where someone could implement a non-intrusive means of preventing people from breaching copyright and ownership laws for good, without exception, I wouldn't complain. Not for a single second.

I'll post a video which I think covers the subject, in relation to the gaming industry, pretty darn well. It's a show made by game designers covering the issue of online piracy of video games. Whilst not talking about the bill, it takes about piracy as a whole and without piracy reaching the state it's at now than this bill would have no reason to exist. It's worth the watch, they make a lot of valid arguments and pretty much hold the exact same opinion I do.

Once you start seeing the word "lobbyist" appear in news articles related to any bills, expect corrupt politicians to rear their ugly heads. The only difference this one has it that it bluntly implies that it will stop at nothing -- including breach of personal information and certain rights like reselling used items (the bill did say "access to such goods and services") -- to maximize their profits by attempting to monopolize the market. So now what happens after the bill is passed? They blacklist craigslist, ebay, and pretty much all file-storage websites? Who knows.

Lamar Smith, author of the Stop Online Piracy Act, has gotten caught up in his own case of copyright infringement. Jamie Lee Curtis Taete of Vice investigated an archived version of Smith’s official site, texansforlamarsmith.com, using Wayback Machine, a time capsule that captures different variations of websites as far back as 1996. This led to the discovery of an original background image that did not credit its owner, photographer DJ Schulte.

Schulte has stated that the image is a Creative Commons photo usable by anyone so long as they give proper credit. ”My conclusion would be that Lamar Smith’s organization did improperly use my image,” said Schulte. He also gave his stance on SOPA via his Flickr account:

SOPA and PROTECT IP Act should never pass.

However, the people who the american public have placed into power that will vote on this bill are mostly retarded people who have had their souls bought by big business. The theory behind it is flawed to begin with. By forcing more control, they think that theoretically, they will be able to stop "illegal" sharing.

Honestly the whole concept of piracy is wrong to begin with. Piracy is when you steal someone else's ideas/product and redistribute it for a product. With the internet the superhighway of connections that it is. It allows for one person to share something they own to so many others at once. Therefore, big business sees it as a loss of potential income. However, most of those people that are pirating it won't be spending money if they couldn't get it free anyways. Really the internet is a great way for sharing to help spread new ideas and products. In the old days, there was no problem if you bought a vhs of a movie, watched it, then let your friends watch it. Now, it seems that one purchase is just good for one use.

The two major issues is that 1, this will cause all acts on the internet to become public. Anonymity will be gone forever. Even if this is not the purpose, this is the result. The second major issue is that this will allow for not just major media censoring, but governmental censoring as well. This is the reason it's such a huge hit towards freedom of speech. Granted this isn't directly stated in the bill, but it leaves that door open. Big companies can complain to the government about their intellectual properties being stolen, government censors sites. There's nothing stopping the government from forming their own "business" and filing a complaint and the government just censoring a website.

Lastly, another issue that bugs me is that so much of the internet starts of as a result of people doing parodies, covers, redubs of current things. With these two acts, House = SOPA and Senate = PIPA, this leads to a lot of smaller artists of people starting off from the internet from being unable to get their content out there.
