Internet speed drops

Lately i've been having a problem with my internet speed on seemingly random times (mainly evenings though). My download speed drops from about 39 mbit/s to about 0,5-1 mbit/s... i've called my ISP but they've not being to useful yet ... "reset your modem- reset your router, don't test on wireless, bla bla" which are all obvious things that i've already tried. They suggest i buy a new router, but i've had this one for about 3 years and i've never had a problem with it so far.
Any clues as to what it may be / what i can do ?
I've seen someone fixing his problem by changing his sync profile in his router(?), i'm decent with computers but i'm absolutely clueless here and it's pretty annoying xD...

(can probs post a pic of my 'normal' speed tomorrow, like i said- around 39 Mbit/s)

Its called internet throttling basically, your ISP will drastically decrease the internet speeds during peak hours, like you said during evening times, to increase their profits. People will resort to doing something else than internet because of slow loading times, therefore less dl and ul done, more profit.
All this is legit, and most companies do it... They obviously try to hide it because many people wouldnt be happy of that, by covering it up saying its "your problem" not ours...

Try bypassing your router and plug your computer directly into the modem. If your speed is still low then try another PC connected in the same manner (no router). If no success reboot the modem and try again. If your speed is still low after all that then the problem is most likely on the ISP side of your connection. (The ISP side of anyone's connection starts at the modem going all the way back to the ISP's equipment building) They're obligated to fix the problem once you've verified that your side of the network isn't the problem.
If you have cable internet keep in mind that your connection to your ISP is a shared one. The signal levels on the line coming into your neighborhood/building is shared by everyone. This can result in degraded performance during periods when everyone is using their internet connection ie evenings. Cable ISPs network are built in such a way where you'll get varying speeds depending on the number of users online in your immediate area.
If you have DSL this shouldn't be a problem because your line is dedicated for you and used by you alone up to a certain aggregation point in the ISP network which usually resides at their equipment building. However your connection could still be bad due to a damaged line or ISP equipment malfunction (Switches, modem etc)
At any rate you should verify and isolate your network to show that you are not the source of the problem before you call them. This way the process of fixing things can be sped up.

I have a 25mbs connection and I get throttled so bad that a lot of websites have to be refreshed a couple times before reloading. I have ONE computer and my Xbox on this connection. Tried a direct connection for a day and seen no change.

I have the same problem here at my dorm. I share my connection with 2 other guys (in the house) and probably a ton more in the building and at random times I'd be getting insanely low speeds. I always thought it was because of my roommates leaving their torrents on or something but yesterday I had the same problem while they both were away. So I figured it can't always be them x)

Damn, they can actually do that legitimately, decreasing DL speed xD?
I've already tried getting the router out and plugging it directly into my pc (since the router is on my room anyhow it didn't take much effort) it doesn't help.
Like i said, speed is back up to normal now...

Probably not the case, but check if someone is connected to the router that shouldn't next time your speed drops.

Not sure how much it is tbh. But it's Mbit so you have to divide it by 8 to get mb/s. If yours is also mbit then I feel for ya mate :/

For reference:
B = byte (has to be capitalized, else it is bit)
b = bit
1 MB/s = 8Mb/s
Sorry, couldn't let it go.

In my home, we've got an all in one package. So digital TV + Telephone + Internet together, it costs us 52 euros a month.
What i find funny is that they advertise their internet to be "stable" xD

Weird, I've got Ziggo as well, and I've never had problems thus far. Might be area related, or internet throttling as someone mentioned before.

Definitely wish I could be pushing out the kinds of speeds you guys get over in the US.
I even get throttled, and DL at about 40kb/s, and browse like a turtle.
