Just wondering which is a better way to turn off my PC

Should i just turn it off "Switch it off/Turn off" or leave it in Hibernation? :soosad:
I would normally leave it in Hibernation but a friend told me thats bad for the PC power supple
and it has me worried now :palm:

Both completely shut off your PC. Only difference is that hibernation saves your current state to your hard drive before shutting down.

I always shut down if I know I'm not going to need it in the near future. If I'm just going up to the shops or something, I just put it on sleep. I have no real need to save the state for an extended period of time (overnight, for example) and as such have no real need to use hibernation.

If i'm going to sleep, then i shut it down. If i'm going somewhere for a couple of hours, then i put it to hibernation. I don't really use sleep much, but i think i should. Well, it goes to sleep after some time anyways, after 20mins usually, depends on what battery mode i leave it on.

Shutdown unless I need it running then I'll just leave it running when I'm out. Half the time with a timer to auto shutdown if I know it'll be done long before I get home.

Leave it on 24/7, like a real man.

lol my new pc hasn't really been shut off, it has less than an hour of shutdown time and very little power on counts.

My older pc has less than 10 hours of shutdown time and i've had that for a few years

I won't be alive to see it, so I don't care.

Selfish maybe. But think of the damage people did to the earth before our generation. It's fucked either way, so stop wasting money and time trying to save it and enjoy the short life you have on it.

Ugh I didn't want to come across as condemning. My desktop too never turns off.

doesn't matter, sleep for short-medium time periods, shut down for long periods of time but it doesn't matter at all. Hibernate is if you need to keep what you're working on for a long time with minimum power. Again, it doesn't matter, one or the other won't extend the life of your computer by anything significant.

Sleep is probably the worse thing ever. It restarts faster, but on laptops a bad bump can destroy your HD.

Turning it off now, takes like 10 seconds longer to turn back on from power off compared to hibernation.

I think this is the way to go :D

I can't justify leaving my computer on when I'm not using it. I probably use my computer for 3 hours a day. The remaining 21, it's off. Why have it on when it's just using lots of power? My power bills don't pay themselves and are insanely expensive ($1000+ every 3 months)so I try to save as much power as I can at all times.

if you have a cheap power supply simply leaving your computer on for long periods of time while playing taxing games is a risk, modern 85+ power supplies are very reliable and can take a beating so its quite safe to do what ever you like and as said above hibernation is just the same as shutting down. i always shut down though but i have an SSD so benefit from fast boot times.
