Why you like one view over the other? I prefer 3rd person views myself because getting to see what my character does is more entertaining for me.

MMOs during Junior High and Gr5-6.

FPS and MOBAs(DotA-like) ever since Junior High. Guild Wars 2 will be a refreshing comeback to the MMO genre though.

Well, i don't care much if it is Third person view or first person view, i care more about the in-game content.

So :

it just depends on the game. I can't imagine playing GTA through first person mode, and I can't imagine playing call of duty through third person mode.

I have a slight preference for 3rd person view, but that is because platformers happen to be my favorite genre. They just don't do well in 1st person... I feel however that many games (Fallout among others) could have been more fun if they were made (optimized) for 3rd person :/.
The perspective we see of the main character is heavily dependent of the type of storytelling the game follows.
3rd person works best for games without constant narration and many non-story related sidequests. (Fable/Fallout etc). 1st person is for games with a straight storyline and minimal bs happening on the side (Halo, Crysis, Thief).

If I had a choice I would usually pick the second category, for I love stories and lore. However the thrills I get out of making the guy on my screen run and jump around somehow often manage to be more addictive :P.

Neither type of games should however be ignored, or you'll miss some true gems out there.

I got lots of love for classic RPG (jrpg) games so I'm more of a third-person player. I also love espionage games like Metal Gear and some early hack'n'slash genre games like Devil May Cry (not a huge fan of the new ones like Bayonetta and Castlevania LOS) -- more reason to lean on 3rd person. If you count RTS games like Command & Conquer as 3rd person, then that too. As for first-person, I am very limited to Counter Strike and COD: Modern Warfare series - I haven't even finished playing my FEAR 2 and Dead Island, which were both pre-ordered.

tl;dr = 3rd person

edit:
From my POV, FPS games nowadays are pretty much just a copy of another. If you've played one, you've played them all.

3rd person
I used to hate first person cause it would make me dizzy, but now i just hate it cause its lame.
I mean try playing games like Tom clancy/gears of war then go to the first person POV of COD etc, its just lame :palm:

Racing games in first person (with the steering wheel showing) is nice though.

I feel the same way. It seems no matter how new the FPS game is or what feature it boasts its hardly realized in first person view. Once you get past the cool graphics and game customization and you actually start playing it just seems like a fancier version of all previous FPS games... I've played some shooters that incorporated new ways to dodge your opponent, fire from behind cover (or more like leaning out), sprint really fast and roll but you don't fully realize those features because of first person view.

Not to totally disregard first person view, it does has it benefits. I've read somewhere that its more of a skill based option as it forces players to keep up their wits and reflexes and I happen to agree with that. It also makes for better aiming and a more accurate shooting player.

I think i like 3rd Person more. 1st Person gives me that "lonely" feel(unless it's a multiplayer). I like to see my char aswell. :D
They should start making 2nd Person games. That would be quite weird. :)

In competitive shooters I prefer first person, but everything else I want third person.

agreed with first person for competitive shooters. third person for more casual games like gta/mass effect.

grew up playing rainbow six and you could toggle 1st/3rd views so i got used to both and enjoy them almost equally. just depends

I'll use Oblivion as my case example for this question. And the answer relies on the purpose, too. I'm a pretty vain guy, I like things looking nice, neat, pretty and ordered. As such, I like being able to look at a character that I have been customising and "gearing out" and appreciate the beauty of it. On the flip side, though, I love a good challenge and will take advantage of what I am able to utilise in order to succeed. If that means that scrolling into 1st person will give me a battle advantage, than I'll do it.

I played Oblivion in both 3rd and 1st person views. I'd explore the lands in 3rd person and fight simple battles in it, too (when I wanted to watch the blocking/dodging/power attacks etc). When it gets down to business, it's straight to 1st person.

I also like 3d p view because I'm a vain person. Oh god how I wish I could live life in 3d person view. With 3d person I can also keep a better eye out for my surroundings.

If I'd have to choose I would go for 1st person since I'm a big FPS fan. But as others said I can't imagine playing GoW, GTA, ME in 1st person.

It depends. Like in racing games I tent to love from the first person view over the entire car view. Some games are just destined to be third person and while others are first. I can't say what I really prefer as I enjoy all of them.

In Racers i like 3rd Person more because in first person(either it's a bumper cam or driver's head cam) i can't really feel how big the car is and i can't see the car and how it reacts. That's why i like seeing the whole car. And i like to see my car if i have tuned it and made it look very nice. :D

So does anyone here think that all the first person games out there could be in 3rd person and still be popular? Would they still carry the same or even more appeal to players?

CS, CoD and BF would never be that good if they were 3rd Person.
3rd Person would destroy KZ in CS. :D

Personally it depends what kinda game I play, if I play a FPS, I want First Person View, when I play a MMO I want third person view.
