Ipod touch problem

So I'm trying to fix a friend's ipod touch.

The problem:
They said they were deleting files from their ipod and must have deleted the wrong file because now it just shows the apple screen then goes off again even if its charged.

Im trying to hook it up to my itunes but its not recognizing it even after a fresh install.

Its dead now if thats a problem why iTunes wont recognize it.

but any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Press the Lock button and Home button and hold it for 30 secs or so?
