Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
Do you download music illegally? If so, do you feel bad? If not, why not? A lot of people are saying you should support the artist you like. But this is how I see it. They are earning millions, they are famous, they are powerful, they can do whatever the hell they want with their lives. Me, I'm working my ass off 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, sweating buckets all for just over minimum wage. And it annoys me so much in interviews when they say, "I've worked so hard on this album". FUUUUUUCK OFF!

I don't buy/download music. I stream it from pandora, youtube, and playlist.com. In this day in age you are almost always connected to the internet.

I rarely download music nowadays either, I use Spotify Unlimited instead. But when I did download music I did not feel bad, the artists barely make any money on the records anyways, what they do make money on is concerts and merchandise.

Well, yes, illegal downloading is wrong.. but the music industry was very stupid to allow music to go digital.

Wrong. It's because there are people who listen to music illegally and post on Youtube that make one become celebrity

I don't, because it is legal to pirate music in The Netherlands but illegal to pirate software and thus games.

I see nothing wrong with pirating a game just for testing it, if you like it you buy it, if you dislike it, just uninstall and move on.

Harder to find music and smaller bands I'll buy the music 99% of the time.
Bigger bands I'll download. On rare occasions I'll buy it.
FLAC is a must.
I also subscribe to Grooveshark Anywhere ($3 Grandfathered account)
better than Spotify imo.

So you don't feel bad that you're stealing from artists, some of which that might be new and struggling to make it in todays industry? You don't feel bad when you download a game that developers worked years on and make significantly less because it is downloaded?

It's making a copy. It's not like I'm removing the original so wtf am I stealing again? Why listen to it on youtube or other streaming site instead of clicking my music icon? I'm saving them some bandwidth and myself some time.

Copyright laws.
Playing with the wording of what you're doing doesn't change the fact that it's illegal in most places, as well as immoral.

lol @ it being immoral. Illegal doesn't make something immoral. It's illegal to Whistle underwater in Vermont. That makes it immoral? Everyone has downloaded music at one point. And if they say they haven't, they are full of shit.

Re: Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
i download music and for a reason!
if i really like a band and they come to the uk, ill go to their gigs and buy their merc to give my support to the band but i refuse to buy music still...
i dont want to support the talentless pop crap that diseases the charts now a days, if i wanted to make a song of that calibre i would get on ProTools (media software) and write a standard melody... put a drum track on it (presets or automatic drum machine so i dont need to actually do any drumming) then run the melody through a synth and mess about with the slider options for echo and delay... maybe add a bass track to it with some simple low pitched noises...
oh and then talk into a mic and auto-tune my voice to sound pro
if i wanted to create a song that had thought and talent in it...
well id need to learn to play the guitar... and drums... and sing... and keyboard.... and then hope that i actually have talent to play any of those things XD

I never said it is immoral because it is illegal. I said it was immoral as well as illegal. Stealing (in your case "copying") is immoral. The fact that "everyone" has downloaded music at one point does not make it any less immoral and illegal...

I can't force you to feel like you've done something wrong. Your own misguided reasoning does the exact opposite. I'm not here to guilt trip you, but you should realize what you are doing is stealing from others to directly benefit yourself. If you don't find that even in the simplest sense wrong then I shudder to think of what else you find moral.
Re: Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
Yeah it's immoral, no I don't feel bad about it, but I also don't try and justify why it is or might be moral cause it's quite obviously not. I can tell myself a bunch of shit to make myself not feel bad about doing it though, much like many other immoral things I actively engage in.

Re: Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
you saying these artists dont work hard, some dont not going to lie but the way thing USED to work was artists would slave for months even years just to get noticed living on scraps then when they get noticed they have to eat, sleep and sweat music to get a good album out once a year now with their down time i dont see why they cant have fun, once you get really big things do get easier but isnt that how everything works, you slave for years on minimum wage to get a good promotion after your on the ladder you stil have to work hard to get noticed but your on the ladder now its a lot easier to go up, once your at the top you can enjoy your spoils in your downtime you earned it.
now back at the start when i cap'ed 'used' because with pop idol and other such programs artists are skipping the whole hard working step of the music industry now this annoys me, they dont work hard to get noticed they get all that for free by doing a few live interviews then some stage performances and winning what some artists work most of their lives trying to get. hell even when they get big for having a good voice they dont write their own songs, do their own album art hell they dont even produce their own music all they do is sing and the masses love them for it because they voted for them. so any artist that even slightly falls into this catagory download they simply dont deserve it, if they wanted a live in music they should have worked for it from the word go, now on the flip side if you like an artist not counting the odd 1 or 2 songs which il hands up admit i download, which often leads me to buy their album or an album which they feature in, but my point is if you like an artist respect thier work buy their album.
thats how i do things

i also buy a lot from itunes can provide a picture but its a bit of-topic this one picture is all i need to prove my point

Re: Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
I wrote an essay on this for college last year and basically I said that I have no problem at all downloading movies as I think actors get paid a crazy amount for such a short time working, I do download the top 40 weekly but I support my artists that I enjoy listening to and do purchase their albums/singles.
I also sometimes run on a download first and buy later scheme, if I enjoy a movie that much I will buy it, for example Avatar and other movies that just blow your mind in blu-ray.
The albums that I do own I download them first or after as well but keep the albums seeled, I love Kanye West and have all his albums but they are sealed in their packages and I illegally downloaded them so I can burn them to a disk that I don't care about getting ruined.
Games are the same with me, I download first to play the singleplayer and if it is decent I'll buy it for the online part and I think that is better, I downloaded the new duke nukem and that god I didn't buy it as I would have shot myself wasting £40 on a game that sucked that bad.

Re: Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
I download what I feel should download. Thing is, by far not every song in an album is good. Or it's very rare at the least.
if it's just a random song, I will download it. however, if I truly feel I like the artist, and he has my respect, I would buy it. unfortunately I do not want to spend money on music right now, so I simply refrain from downloading it. I can only think of 4 artist that fall into this category anyway. moreover my taste for music is 'unique'. I tend to mostly like music that is far from mainstream, and therefor hard to come by, either in my country or in general outside the internet simply because it's really fcking old. Finally I also just don't like buying things online, so downloading is the simple choice.
I don't think it's immoral. I think it's smart. many of the songs/albums people get probably won't last them a month before they're bored with them. That kind of song is not really worth the money. downloading is a sort of insurance and/or library to lend from until you decide to pay your respects to the creators.

As funny and equally mature of a reply that was, I don't see why I would shit bricks at the fact that you download games. So do I. I feel bad about it when I really think of what I'm doing, but that's another story. If you're going to do something at least admit to the fact..

Re: Downloading Music Illegally - Immoral?
Immoral.. well I think so. You're 'stealing' something. inb4 a copy isn't stealing argument or that's already going on in this thread.
However piracy increases sales. A lot of people want to hear/try/test things out, but X doesn't offer that. Then a lot of people will buy it to support the developers/artist/etcetc.
This is just with a writer and his books. It's a great video to watch.

That's not what I said. I said I shudder at the thought of what you find morally acceptable because you find absolutely nothing wrong with stealing things to directly benefit yourself. And why should I save you any maturity comments? Your replies scream immaturity and inconsideration. Just because you enter a playground doesn't mean it's time to act like a child.

Well, what we can do about it?
I mean... if I can get the music for free, great. if I can't I would leave it as it.. profit? I think most profit is that they are becoming popular... and they do earn it by making concerts and meetings and stuff like that.
Since Internet existed, everything is nearly illegal.
Either way, I think someone get it before it's being free?
