I really like football and have a lot of respect for the players, but I don't think just putting in the hard work will get you far, at least not as far as hockey.
You need to have the dimensions of a football player to be successful.
In hockey you have 5'7" Gionta that can compete with a 6'7" Gill and have both be equally successful too.
Size doesn't limit you to your role either, you have big guys and little guys playing D and F.
I'm only bringing up height to make a point. I don't love hockey because anyone can play, it's just that the players tend to be outstanding individuals.
EDIT: Just realized you weren't talking about American football. Statement still stands but the height thing is less relevant. Also, perceive less respect than I intended.

I can respect hockey for that reason, and I also agree that while hard work and dedication can get you places in football or basketball, it depends too much on genetics.
Also dom, I had to make the hockey/dentist remark. Still love you.

Ah, i was thinking more in the sense of some people being naturally bigger (muscular) and agile than others. In football/soccer height has like no relevence, some of the best players in the world, Messi, iniesta, xavi, are all 5'7'' or lower.
In basketball/american football etc I guess height does seem to have some impact, but there have been many players under 6' in both sports (football much less so) that have had epic careers. Im saying all sports need different requirements that some ppl are naturally good at. You might not need height for hockey but youd need agility a lot more than say, a linesmen for football.

A truly amazing sport .. oh wait, actually just no. Stop cheering for others and play something that isn't prone to serious injury or brain damage yourself.
Hitting bullshit with sticks, seriously wtf.
Spoiler!
I would like to say it isn't as bad as Nascar but I start questioning that statement as well and that isn't a good thing.

The NHL is trying to curb hits to the head, hits from behind and fighting. Don't spout shit like it's fact if you don't follow the sport.

Amen, brother.
At one point there was even talk about this special helmet thats in two pieces. If you wanted to fight you take off the plastic portion and all thats left is a foam helmet. But I think that was just on TSN/Sportsnet not the NHL themselves, not completely sure.

The thing about fighting that people don't seem to get is that it's a role that some players fill. It's not like they have team on team brawls. It's 1-2 players on each side that are designated to fight when a fight needs to go down. Sure, a guy may have the odd fight to relieve his frustrations but it's never against the heavy hitting professional fighter.
Team on team brawls only happen like once a year, if that, and players match up to other players of their own size.
In either case, I would much rather see two guys fight eachother then take penalties, than have two frustrated teams diving all game and putting in cheap shots.

I didnt state anything as fact, reread. the NHL should have to "try" to get rid of ridiculous hits on heads etc, they should just dop it. Its pretty obvious when a fight is going on, no? lol.
I agree in soccer/football diving has gotten way out of hand, but the replay thing is a whole issue w/ it taking "a lot of time" according to some stupid peoples (since the timer never stops in soccer/football)
