Laptops.

I'm going to be going to college this fall. So, I'm currently looking for a laptop. Only problem is, I don't know a whole lot about laptops, as far as what's good, what's not, and yeah.
So, I'm asking my fellow SRF'ers opinions on what to get. A few ground rules:
1. No Macs.
2. My ideal price range would be around $650. Give or take. Definitely no more then a thousand.
3. I'd like to be able to game on said laptop. I'm not asking for an "uber 1337" laptop, or whatever. But yeah.
So, any ideas?

What are you looking to get out of this laptop? Battery life? computer intensive tasks?
Battery life
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product I know this doesn't hit your price range but it's amd's of the Intel Atom. It's a dual core and a much more powerful core vs the Atoms. Also comes with a good integrated GPU. Competes with the ION platforms.
For the powerhouse type laptop I will need to do some reaserch because I haven't looked for awhile.

I don't really care a whole lot about battery life. 3ish hours is fine by me. Assuming I get increased performance for the lack of battery life.

Just to let you know, 3 hours performance battery life on a laptop is a LOT! If you want that much I would say you actually do care about it

Unless you purchase a 10 inch laptop or something you'll probably not get any more than one hour to one and a half.

Not really. My brother, who works for dell, tells me that their battery's last for about 5 hours normally. Less if you have a better graphics card and what not. But yeah.
Perhaps I'll go buy one of those fancy little "Alienware" laptops.

Don't get alienware they are over priced. Good laptops but you need to make an investment.
I get 5+ hours with my netbook with no power saving. Normal laptop should last 3 with power savingsp

That's always what they say. They said mine could last 3 hours as well. After 20-30 minutes it's wasted. And its even worse now. That's because it's getting old now. It can maximum hold 5 minutes now

30 minutes is very little time for the battery .
(btw when did you buy it?) .
I bought mine from like 10 months and it can stay +2.5 hours ....

How large is your screen? Mine is 4 years old but even as new it couldn't last more than about 30 minutes time. I don't know anybody with a laptop that can last more than one and a half hour, really. At least not if they have a decent monitor.
My screen is 17Inch by the way.

I saw it. Rather similar to dell Inspiron 15R (N5110), from what I can tell. And that's the type of computer I'm looking for.
Just getting different input.

it's all good, but i do like the quad core + ATI, it's a good deal for now, and the price fluctuates unfortunately.

I have no idea how large it is (never cared for any technical issues about computers) but it has a decent size and a clear image .
