Realty TV shows

What makes them so popular? Remember back in the days when we never had them? Every other channel on TV now is showing some boring realty TV show. Why do they even call them that anyways when most of it is staged? I was also wondering what was it that had our attention on TV before these "reality shows"..

in Holland we had Big Brother and De Gouden Kooi. those were the only two reality shows that became a hit. nowadays we have some reality shows left, but no one really watches them anymore.

Well they've gotten boring..

part of what makes it boring is that it becomes easier to see that the programs are directed. nobody wants to see things going well with people, they like to see drama so drama is made. not just with reality shows like the ones on mtv (which in essence all are the same) but also with shows on discovery channel lol. all the bikes OCC make are done within the last 5 minutes before they are shown to the public. coincidence? no lol. nobody likes to see people build bikes that are done in time =,=

idk thats what makes it boring for me. im fine with watching some of the shows because they're entertaining.. but imo they're hardly "reality" any more, dunno if they ever even were. some dutch people that participated in dutch shows actually told the media that they were directed at some point.
