At 8.30pm on Saturday 26 March 2011, hundreds of millions of people across the globe will switch off the lights of homes and businesses for one hour – Earth Hour, the world’s largest public action for the environment – acknowledging a commitment to go beyond the hour with actions that benefit the planet in the year ahead.

I agree 1 hour isn't really going to make any difference, gotta go beyond that hour and keep saving.

Thats the whole idea behind earth hour...The whole point is to show just how much can be saved in just one hour of near total cooperation. The effect is to make you aware and encourage you to continue energy saving practices. Don't be morons.

I always turn off lights in the house except for the living room lamp and I turn it on whichever room I'm in. Just the way I was raised in a developing country I guess - not for 'Mother Earth' or anything...just the whole idea of being efficent and avoiding being wasteful.

What I want to know is what happens to all that "unused" electricity? is it stored? or does it just get wasted?
I am guessing it's stored but I have no proof hense why i'm asking.

It's a nice idea, but I have a better one:
How about simply not being wasteful? As Inky stated:
inky wrote:I always turn off lights in the house except for the living room lamp and I turn it on whichever room I'm in. Just the way I was raised in a developing country I guess - not for 'Mother Earth' or anything...just the whole idea of being efficent and avoiding being wasteful.

Why don't you always do that? Atleast i don't need a specific hour once a year to do that.

When you quote someone like you just did and like I'm doing you are referring to them and generally not 2 or 3 quotes prior

My room turns into summer within a couple hours with the PS3, TV, and let's hope the PC isn't on. My room isn't big.
WHY MUST YOU ACT LIKE A HEATER? ._.
As for earth hour.. uhh.. I was doing the same like normal. I don't leave the lights on for no reason. I don't leave the TV on for no reason. I just don't leave my microwave running for no reason. lol Seriously as previously mentioned I guess it goes back to not being wasteful in general.

Anyone noticed the switch on youtube during earth hour? And a while before/after that I think. Hitting it would change the background to black hehe, pretty fun untill it started to always load black.

I plugged in my 2 old pc boxes and made them both run SETI@home, because saving electricity won't make the power companies rethink the situation and shut down powerplants, nothing will be saved, electricity isn't a commodity that's being stored in batteries(afaik).
