Laptop Freezes after ticking sound

The last time my laptop freezes frequently. It starts with a quite loud ticking sound, you can hear the ticking very clearly. Then after 2 seconds or so my whole laptop freezes and it won't work until the ticking sound stops. This sometimes takes 30 seconds and sometimes it takes even 5 minutes. I don't know whether it's my cooler or my harddisk that freezes. It usually happens when I'm playing a game or watching a 720p/1080p movie, but sometimes it occurs when I'm just browsing the web. Anyone can help? I have an Asus A52J with i5 processor.

I still have the warranty on it so I can take it back to the store, but the repair takes about six weeks. So if I can fix it myself and it wouldn't cost more than 50 euro's, I'd rather do it myself.

odds are it's the hard drive. If it was a fan the system would become unstable but not totally frozen

Do note if you do this yourself odds are you will void any warranty on the system.

just to make sure... how much RAM do you have?
I have teh feeling it's your computer running out of RAM and trying to use the HD instead. since HD is much slower, it may feel like freezing :/

That does end up stressing the hell out of the hard drive tho.

would cost you less then $50 to fix but seeing as you have warrenty just use it, back up what you can.

Also seeing as most laptops only have 1 hdd but room for a 2nd check if it can have a 2nd use that $50 your so willing to throw away to add a new one. im not sure how strict your warrenty is so check to make sure upgrading the hdd dont void it as you have to open a panel on the bottom, if it dont void it you could also fix yourself but it means you have 1 hdd for your $50 if they fix it you get the original one repaired then the one you buy.

im suggesting the 2nd one mainly for back up uses so it dont have to be big

edit//if you find a cheap hdd check for other upgrades ie ram it was mentioned above me i only just read, both would have great benefits for it in the long run

Well the fact that he has an i5 means he should at least have 2+ GB of RAM. But I also doubt the RAM is an issue.

but upgrading it to 4gb wont harm will it? but it also depends what he is doing some programs are very demanding and may use more then the alloted 2gb. besides i think its a hdd failure

also want to add for what ever reason i wrote check i was meant to say cheap but must have been thinking something else

I have 4 GB of DDR. I think imma bring it back, now it's happening every 10 minutes. It's soo f*cking annoying, because I'm watching a movie and every 10 minutes it freezes and then it forwards them movie like 10 minutes. but it's gonna s*ck not to have a PC/laptop for 6 weeks.

EDIT: because the movie was freezing the whole time I got desperate and started trying all kinds of things. I moved the movie from D: to C: and I wasn't expecting it all to work, but it did. After I moved the movie the laptop didn't freeze anymore. does this mean anything or should I still bring back the laptop?

just open it up yourself if you know how and take the broken hard drive out and put a new one in.
