why did 6.3 magnitude of earthquake did so much damage in Christchurch? It's not like its a 3rd world country compared to Haiti.

6.3 is not that strong to do that much damage.

6.3 is very strong dude. Remember, each point that it goes up is exponential.

Furthermore, 2 other key factors need to be examined:

Distance from Epicenter, and Wave type.

If the epicenter was right under ChristChurch then one could expect a lot lot of damage. However, if the epicenter was far away in some remote place, but the shocks that hit Christ Church were 6.3 then it could (not would) do less damage.

Also, if the waves that ChristChurch felt were Horizontal waves, then less damage could be expected, however if they were Vertical waves, a lot more damage could be expected.

Exactly a week and a half prior to this event occurring, my mother was holidaying in Christchurch. We are all pretty thankful that she didn't extend her tip.

It's a terrible event though, truly tragic. I'm thankful that the death count is still quite low, it could of easily been a lot higher.

Woah, that reminds me of when my family and I vacationed in Los Cabos, Mexico right before the big tornado hit all of that area. Coincidence?
