Post by CeLL »

my car broke down and my step-brother-in-law has so graciously loaned me his vehicle. The kicker is, its a stick. i feel like a total noob learning to drive this shit. ultimately this is a good skill to learn. you dont have time to be picky when jacking a vehicle in the future zombie apocalypse.
so whats your opinion as far as transmissions go Auto or manual. Disscuss.

I feel it's an unnecessary nuisance, unless it's a sports car.

That said, I can drive a stick, but not great.

If you dont care.. and you've never driven manual before.. then stay with auto.

You wont miss what you've never had.

Dont think i would ever go to auto.

You can learn to drive both here. Problem is, people that learned to drive manual are allowed to drive automatic cars while people who learn to drive auto aren't allowed to drive a manual car.

I learned to drive manual but, and I will admit I've never driven one, I think I would prefer a automatic. Seems so much easier, especially on hills and shit.

Manual.
It feels like im not actualy driving when i drive an auto (which only happend once >.<).
Stick shifting isnt actualy that hard to learn though... if you have a small parking space or so to practice on, and someone to explain you the basics.

I taught a friend of mine in about 2-3 hours.

If you can drive a manual you can defiantly drive an auto.
Anyway.. "Manual vs Auto" That's probably a matter of personal taste.

Daily driver = auto
Car to have fun with (offroad, racing, drag, etc) = standard

I dont own a car yet, but I've had my liscence for a couple of years so I've driven multiple type of cars. And let me tell you, auto is much more enjoyable when stuck in traffic. Once, I was driving on a bridge with my friends car (i was DD that night) and there was a massive traffic jam cuz only one lane was openned and I had to clutch/gas for over an hour on a quite steep ascending hill. Horrible experience.

then you still a beginner at manual, you could always use hand brakes in traffic jams and put in neutral.

I would definitely choose manual, saves gas(If you are a smart driver), good acceleration, more cheaper(in maintenance and some other stuff).

Its not really as hard as it sounds, once you get used to it, its just like controlling any part of your body.

Auto is the best, but everyone who drives a car should also be able to handle a manual.

I grew up in a junk yard, driving 10-21 speed semis around the property and 4-5 speed wreckers around. So its pretty much 2nd nature. Most the transmissions in cars now days have synchronizers that make it simple enough that a drunk person can drive. Try driving a 3 ton dually without power steering and a sketch clutch, its a bit of a workout =(

Also, Cell, I'd let you drive my stick any day.

I don't get why people complain and moan about how manual is hard to drive! 1hr of driving = 70 calories 1hr of biking = 600 calories burned

Any auto driver that can't drive manual is just too lazy, its so simple and like fiction said, after 1 month of non stop driving manual, its a second nature. Everyone who says auto is easier, its bullshit, honestly annoys me when people say that its hard going up hills and stuff, I can say from experience that its not. Just get the timing right, and so what if your wheels spin a little? Been driving manual ever since I learned to drive, never drove automatic, unless driving a friend's car, and its annoying for me because im always looking for the clutch, and trying to switch gears...

tl:dr, manual car = real car people who drive automatic = too fucking lazy to drive manual when its not hard at all

Yeah I'll do the same, it's like losing an arm but you still try to pick things up with it. I think manual enhances the experiences of driving, for those of us who like driving, but for those who use a car just to get from A to B, they'd rather have that arm free for texting and such.(not saying you can't text in a standard) I'd rather work on manuals than auto if I had a choice, also if you drive manuals right, they're more economical.
