What do you guys prefer?

If an online friend was going to stop visiting a forum or log onto xfire/msn (what ever you use). Would you rather have them just disappear without a trace? or say a formal good bye?

I mean online friends, are still friends, and you can apply that somewhat to your IRL friends.

Just because I have a history of disappearing does not mean this topic means I am doing that again.
It just came to my mind that sometimes online friends do disappear and sometimes I miss talking to them. Just felt like trying to make a discussion out of it.
