Can Animals Sense Natural Disasters?

Earthquakes, Storms etc

Ever notice the quiet before a Storm?.. lulz

Well, this "myth?!" has been around for a while, I definitely believe animals can sense things before we do.
Basically, before something bad happens, like a natural disaster, people say their animals start to freak out.

I would love to hear your thoughts.. xD

Well I'll avoid the religious shitstorm with the entire fixed fate thing but I dont think anyone can predict anything through sense.

Pretty interesting read, I would say.. xD

Animals Survive the Asian Tsunami Disaster

Do animals possess a 'sixth sense' that enables them to sense natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis? It's a difficult question to answer with certainty, but it's a question that has been repeated in the wake of the recent Indian Ocean tsunami.

In Sri Lanka, wildlife experts have found surprisingly few signs of animal deaths as a result of the tsunami. This suggests that animals fled the low-lying coastal regions before the tsunami struck. Additionally, there are widespread accounts of odd animal behavior that was observed just prior to the tsunami. The National Geographic cited reports of:

* elephants that fled for high ground
* dogs that refused to set foot outside
* birds that abandoned vulnerable coastal breeding grounds
* zoo animals that retreated into shelters

Scientists are interested in what these animals might be sensing—vibrations in the ground, changes in atmospheric pressure, or sounds that we might not sense or happen to disregard. If animals do in fact have some 'sixth sense' when it comes to natural disasters, and if we can identify that warning signal, then we would be on our way to finding an early detection system that could warn human populations of coming disasters. And such a system would mean lives could be saved.

Don't they feel/hear the very small vibrations emitted by the storm MUCH sooner than we do? I've seen videos where dogs/cats run like crazy right before an earthquake happens, I think someone posted it.

I'm 100% sure animals feel/hear them before we do. A sixth sense, no.

Yes. The first thing i usually see that reacts first are the Bird.

but when you are indoors, and if you have cats inside. Cats would be my second animal to guess disasters.

3rd would be Man's Best friend, Dog. They do crazy shit like techno dog. But have more running around and barking ferociously kinda stuff.

hmmm... should i even mention Paul the Octopus :D

I some have experiences of those 3. Usually bird are for storms, heavy rains and tamable forest fires. they all go like stampeding in large numbers in the sky, you know its unusual because of their numbers and speed of flight, they're like flying the shit out of the place going in 1 direction. The cat is like disaster on certain location. i witnessed 1 time where my friends land lady's cat saver her life. her boarding house is near the street where the land lady's room is the first to be seen. (long story, short) cat did some unusual crazy shit biting, scratching and jumping at her head. the land lady jumped up her chair and chased her cat. few seconds later a multi-cab crashed into her beloved room. precisely where she was sitting at. her cat comes back to normal. 2 weeks later she has a new room and has new stuff.

3rd. Dog. Earth quake. and like cat does. instead they try to stop you or warn you of sumthing. My father has first hand experience about this one. he has a dog when he was young. his dog stays in one location looks whats up ahead and goes there. he comes back sitting precisely at where he sat before and did it like 3 times before the dog starts barking wildly. My father believes in such things. then he left the location sprinting like hell. the next day arrived the location was empty. News got to him that a man stabbed ppl in the place. good thing he wasnt there.

i dont want to argue in this cuz i dont have scientific evidence. But i believe is such things. cuz i have witnessed it. Specially the birds. They're like my weather forecast.

ima edit this post later for clerical checks... cuz library is gona close

I think they can sense that some things are going to happen. For example the Tsunami in Thailand, before the wave hit the shore all the animals have run away from the beach to a safe area.

I personally think so. I know I've seen my dog act strange before something has happened. Like trying to tell me something.

i dont think its a matter of sense so much as that some animals can see into certain spectrums of light, and can hear different tones than we can. i think this gives them a heads up.

I see none of you grew up on a farm or ranch. Like humans, animals can sense changing barometric pressure brought on when a storm is coming. Humans don't have as heighten senses as dogs or such, but we can still tell a change. Even the dumbest of animals will usually know there is a storm on its way(Cows). As for earthquakes, they usually feel the movements in the ground. Also dogs have been known to sniff out diseases like cancer in humans.

None of this is supernatural, its just natural.

Just because there are dark clouds doesn't mean there is going to be a storm where you are. So yes it does make you special. Hop on!

no, but we would likely work on populating mars, or venus. which ever would be easier to create an atmosphere on.

Knowing ≠ being able to withstand it.

If you knew there was going to be another ice age, would you be able to stop it?

Yes.

Many cases I can predict if it's going to rain or not by just breathing to know the humidity in the air.
