Cultural foods

Post by cbkilla »

So both my parents/grandparents are from Russian so for most of my life any food made at home was Russian food, my two personal favorites are:

Borsh- A soup with beats, cabbage, carrots, potato, your choice of meat(usually beef), and some spices.
Spoiler!

misnoy salat(translated to english is mayonnaise salad)-potatoes,boiled eggs, carrots, green peas, pickles, green onion, your choice of meat, mixed together with a little mayo.

Spoiler!

*ingredients may vary in different parts of russia

growing up in the states my friends were always hesitant to try russian food(especially borsh because of its color) but most of them actually like it.

so what are some of your favorite foods that are exclusive to your nationality.

Lol, really? You've seen our pictures.

What I KNOW what we're mixed with: German, African (not sure which part of Africa), Native American. I'm sure there's a lot more in there, just I'm too lazy to go looking.

As for my favorite ethnic food from my own background, only been fed german food mainly, and only from my grandmother. My favorites are her sauerkraut and Kartoffelkloß.

OnT:

Traditional Southern comfort food is what i like most about the holidays

Spoiler!

I know alot of our food is looked at as unhealthy or has been commercialized to the point where its downright disgusting but there is very rustic and comforting quality to Soul Food and when its prepared right it doesn't have to be unhealthy...

the mac and cheese is baked not fried

also not everything fried is unhealthy. That's largely dependent on the oil, the quality of it, whats being fried, and for how long.

that's just the way its done. Garbage stuff like easy-mac aside, just putting macaroni into sauce has never really been how its prepared around here. Typically in baked macaroni and cheese the cheese sauce has minced onions and egg and when you bake it gives the dish a different (better imo) texture. Also you get the nice char on the top which is a must have for me.

eating mac-n-cheese without baking it is like not browning your steak before you pop it in the oven...
