Any device that propels a projectile at a high rate of speed is dangerous. Personally I don't like the dart gun, as "you could put your eye out!" - sorry, old movie quote - but the spud guns at least are made of a good highpressure material, so it's not likely to blow up, and I don't know many people that are going to put a body part in front of a loaded weapon whether it's a .44 magnum or a spud gun.
Up at a friends house by a lake about 3/4 mile across, we got a potato to go about 1/3 of the way across the lake. Of course then they started shooting them at people in the boats fishing.
