Well crud

So last night on my way home from work I got pulled over by a police officer. I was all confused as to why he pulled me over since I wasn't speeding or doing anything illegal, *that I was aware of*. Turns out my license plate tags had expired two months ago in May. I wasn't aware of this because the car I was driving was my parents car. To make matters worse, the insurance on that car had just expired 2 days ago, again, I was not aware of this. Not my car. So yeah, I have a court day now. First time I've ever had to go to court, so, do any of you have any experience/suggestions to help me out a bit?

You should consider yourself lucky that they didn't arrest you and repossess your car. This rarely happens but still a possibility.
What you need to do is get your tags and insurances renewed. When you go before the judge make sure you take the documents showing you have done so. This should either drop the fine or reduce it.
-Also... Whatever you do DON'T lie to a police officer or a judge.

Did you guys read...he said it wasn't his, so therefor his parents need to renew it all, least that's how it is here, no one but the owner can renew tags and insurance. Personally, I think they set you up to burn.

as far as i know (depending on the state you are in, the car owners are liable for stuff concerning the car.
anything hit with the vehicle is the driver's problem.
As a driver , you may argue that the car's owner (parents) failed to inform you of the car's insurance status.
If they really want to get you to pay an absurdly high fee it's best to get an attorney specialized on such cases.
But always stay cool
Court is an effective way to get some of the tax payer's money, and waste your time in this case.
And the police officers get bored and stop you for ludicrous reasons sometimes...
like at 1am while on my way to drop someone at the hospital and got stopped because my car was dusty (whole check on validity of license, car papers and necessities like warning triangle and alcohol test even after insisting that the drive was urgent)

Alright so turns out my parents had already renewed the insurance, they just forgot to put the proof of them doing so in the car. >_>
Tags are updated as of today.
Luckily the officer didn't say anything about the insurance expiring. He only mentioned the old tags in the ticket. So woot for that.
But yeah, this is going to be bothering me until I get it over with. Ugh, August 27th hurry up already! *stressing*

In my country when you go to the court for the first time they usually let you go without paying anything.

In my country they don't send people to a damn judge to waste people's time with a stupid 'offense' like this.

they will drop it once they see all is updated. Also he has to go to court because the infraction is on his license. Not the plates/car.

Thank you Captain Obvious.
This is no big deal... It would cost you more to get a lawyer than it would to pay the ticket. lol As long as he shows up to court and provides the proof of renewal he's A-Okay.

And yet didn't catch what was said. You said 'he', not his parents, if it was so obvious I believe you would of been smart enough to say so. But it wasn't, therefor, your a dumb ass and I was correcting you.

Tell the truth, plead guilty , show up to your hearing 30-1hr prior to it starting, respect the authorities there and you will be fine. Its pretty easy to check the tags fyi stickers on plates show when they expire.. better to take precautions for the future

I said,"Get -your- tags and insurances renewed" and you're trolling me cause I didn't add the word parents'? Sorry, but I'm sure the guy is smart enough to figure out his parents would have to renew them. Go troll someone else.
