Music of the sun recorded by scientists

Astronomers at the University of Sheffield have managed to record for the first time the eerie musical harmonies produced by the magnetic field in the outer atmosphere of the sun.
They found that huge magnetic loops that have been observed coiling away from the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as coronal loops, vibrate like strings on a musical instrument.

*raises hand* Question!

doesn;t sound need air to be able to be heard? like, waves need air.

So that would been there's air in space, and also, all scientists have been wrong for o so long.

So there IS the ability to live in space.

They can't be heard in space. The sun still vibrates. The scientists recorded the vibrations by looking at them. They then recreated those vibrations in a lab.

I don't know exactly what they did, but that's what I would do.

Edit: EvGa's explanation below is answer.

More like our solar system. Leave the galaxy music to the supermassive blackhole at the center of the galaxy. :P

Magnetic fields.

Check out pulsars. Their electromagnetic radiation can be converted to sound also.

uhuh. Kanye West did everything.

He invented the machine used to listen to those things. He made the sun. He's the father of those scientists.

Kanye West created, designed, invented, everything here.
*Pfffhhphpp* Now who the **** made this coffee!?
"Kanye West did, sir"
hmmm delicious...

How did they record this when there is no air for the sound waves to move in

coz they are not normal sound vibration, they are magnetic fields
it's not sound, it's the result of the conversion of magnetic fields into the sound equivalent.

all these millions of years that the sun has been punmping out tracks for the magnetic field album release... and the studio hasn't been open yet :soosad:

i hope i live to see the premier

Nasa warned last week that the sun's activity is starting to increase following an extended period of low activity and is on course to throw out unprecedented levels of magnetic energy into the solar system by 2013.
