Any new viruses going around?

I was chilling today watching movies online when all of a sudden, everything froze, got pixelated and all the color got screwed up, than more pixelated, than blue screen that didn't say anything since everything got more and more pixelated. I tried restarting several times but the screen is black with light rainbow pixel lines in the background with this weird white halo circle that starts off in the middle and fades away. Only way to get it working was a hard reset, remove battery, than unplug completely.

Comp seems to be working fine after a few more resets, but not sure what happened. Anyone got an idea of what this sounds like? Is it overheat, not enough memory, virus, etc?

sounds like heat problems if you ask me, overheating graphics card to be more exact thats why it took you a while to get it back to normal needed it to cool down

I had a feeling it was that due to the sudden screen freezing, than color changing and pixellating happening. Guess I really should start looking for a desktop. Running this labtop 24/7 might not be the best. Just too lazy to turn it off and back on.

You can try using RivaTuner to speed up your fan to 100% so it won't overheat as much.

It's on a cooling pad with 3 fans. Although one broke and I'm not really bothered to install a new one since it cost me 5$. It's warm over the main hd, but it's not like the old days before i got the cooling pad and played sro. That shit got hot enough to boil water o_O.

I think it might've been cuz I had l4d2 idling in the background while loading 2 movies and watching a utube vid.... woops.

chipset, but same difference.

Laptops + vidgames + heat = bad

Could be hardware related too, run some diags from vendor for grins.

off topic, I know...but I looked it up and the number of viruses specifically written for Linux jumped last year, to 863!!!!

Whatever shall we do!!!!

There are only ~100,000 - 1 MILLION Windows- or cross-platform viruses. We are screwed!!!

kidding aside, yeah, Linux can get viruses but it's really damn rare.

theyre rare cause no one cares about linux. dont get me wrong if i could find a good linux that i didnt need emulators and had to find special driver to use, id be all over that shit in a heart beat.

It's more rare because:

-Linux makes up only about 4% of desktops
-the modular system means less likelihood of infection
-it's inherently more secure because of multiple levels of user access - by default, you don't get root rights, but user rights. By contrast Windows XP installs give you admin rights by default.

Apache webservers make up quite a bit of the Internet servers out there, and you don't hear about them getting hacked very often, or having a large outbreak like the Melissa virus from years ago.

Ubuntu has come a long way in distros and other distros have made great strides too. I run MintLinux at work and it auto-detects everything I have including the 3d vidcard and installs GL drivers plus almost everything you'd need to view sites, PDF's, play 3d games, etc. Add WINE and it becomes ALMOST as good as Windows. Throw on ClamAV and you're set.

Sure thing, they do make it as user friendly as possible. They also just released v9, but I still like 8. I'd suggest the KDE version, but you might like Gnome instead.

9 is here:

And if you're a graphics guru, GIMP's on here by default.
